To be "made alive in Christ" is a powerful biblical concept that captures the essence of salvation and transformation through Jesus. It emphasizes how believers, once spiritually dead due to sin, receive new life through faith in Christ. This theme appears throughout the New Testament, particularly in Ephesians 2:4-5 and Colossians 2:13, among other passages.
Understanding Spiritual Death
Before understanding what it means to be “made alive in Christ,” we must first recognize the condition of humanity before salvation. The Bible teaches that all people are born in sin and are spiritually dead apart from God.
● Ephesians 2:1 (NIV): "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins."
● Romans 3:23 (NIV): "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

The Work of Christ in Making Us Alive
The transformation from spiritual death to life happens because of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Colossians 2:13-14 (NIV): "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; He has taken it away, nailing it to the cross."
Here, Paul explains that through Jesus' sacrificial death, the record of our sins was erased. The phrase "nailing it to the cross" signifies that Jesus bore the punishment for our sins so that we might receive life.
What It Means to Be Made Alive in Christ
Being made alive in Christ is not just about receiving eternal life; it also involves transformation in this present life. It means:
1. A New Identity – Believers are no longer identified by their past sins but as children of God (2 Corinthians 5:17).
2. Freedom from Sin – We are no longer slaves to sin but empowered by the Holy Spirit to live righteously (Romans 6:11-14).
3. A Relationship with God – Spiritual life restores our fellowship with God, allowing us to walk in His presence (John 17:3).
4. A Purposeful Life – Being alive in Christ means living for God’s glory and fulfilling His will (Ephesians 2:10).
Living as Those Made Alive in Christ
Since we have been made alive, we are called to live in a way that reflects this transformation. Colossians 3:1-2 (NIV): "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."
This means focusing on eternal values rather than worldly pursuits. It also means growing in faith, resisting sin, and living in obedience to God’s word.
Being "made alive in Christ" is the greatest transformation a person can experience. It is a move from spiritual death to eternal life, from bondage to freedom, and from separation from God to a restored relationship with Him. This transformation is not earned but received through grace by faith in Jesus Christ. As believers, we are called to live in the fullness of this new life, walking in righteousness, love, and purpose for God’s glory.
