The words “For this reason I came into the world—to destroy the works of the devil” are both profound and powerful. Rooted in 1 John 3:8, they encapsulate the central mission of Jesus Christ. They reveal not only a divine purpose but also a spiritual reality: that there is a force actively working against God and His creation, and Jesus came specifically to undo and overcome that force.
Understanding the Works of the Devil
To fully grasp this statement, we must first understand what the "works of the devil" are. According to the Bible, Satan is a deceiver, a liar, and the father of lies (John 8:44). From the Garden of Eden to the present day, his goal has always been to separate humanity from God. His works include sin, rebellion, sickness, oppression, fear, division, and ultimately death. These are not just abstract concepts—they are very real effects that we see in the world every day.
