“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
Children are gifts from God (Psalm 127:3), entrusted into our care with the responsibility of raising them to know, love, and serve the Lord. This responsibility isn't merely cultural or moral—it’s deeply spiritual. When parents fail to train their children in the fear and knowledge of God, the consequences go far beyond the home. The Bible is filled with both instructions and examples that show what happens when children are raised without godly direction. Let’s explore the biblical consequences of neglecting this divine responsibility.
1. The Child May Grow Up Rebellious
The book of Proverbs makes it clear:
“The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.” – Proverbs 29:15
When children are left without correction or instruction, they grow up with a mindset of entitlement, pride, and rebellion. Their understanding of authority is warped. They do not respect leadership, nor do they honor God. Rebellious children not only create disorder in the home but may grow into adults who defy laws, abuse others, and reject the gospel message altogether.
2. The Child May Lack a Moral Compass
“And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord… and they did evil in the sight of the Lord.” – Judges 2:10-11
One of the clearest examples of spiritual neglect can be found in the generation that followed Joshua. Despite seeing the wonders of God in their parents’ lifetime, they were not instructed to personally know the Lord. As a result, they fell into idolatry and sin. Children who do not receive godly training are more likely to adopt worldly standards of behavior and fail to understand the consequences of sin.
3. The Family Will Experience Shame and Regret
“A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.” – Proverbs 17:25
When children make destructive life choices, it often brings heartbreak to the entire family. Parents may feel guilt, regret, or even public shame. This can damage relationships, create divisions, and sometimes even lead to mental and emotional breakdowns. Without the foundation of godly discipline, children are prone to foolishness, and parents bear the emotional weight of that outcome.
4. Generational Sin and Curses May Continue
“For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation…” – Exodus 20:5
When ungodly habits and behaviors are not confronted and corrected in one generation, they often carry over into the next. Children learn more by what they observe than by what they’re told. A home without godly discipline becomes a breeding ground for generational issues—addictions, abuse, pride, and ungodliness can be passed down unless intentionally broken through the fear of the Lord.
5. They May Miss Their Divine Purpose
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee...” – Jeremiah 1:5
Every child is born with a divine purpose, but it takes godly parenting to nurture, pray for, and guide them to that purpose. A child who is not spiritually trained may never discover their calling in God. They may follow careers, relationships, or ideologies that draw them far from their intended destiny. The enemy delights in stealing destinies, especially when parents are unaware of their child’s spiritual development.
6. The Society at Large Suffers
“By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.” – Proverbs 11:11
Ungodly parenting doesn’t just affect homes—it affects communities. Disrespectful, lawless, and spiritually blind individuals eventually enter society and create systems of corruption, crime, and immorality. Every adult who corrupts a system was once a child shaped by someone. When children aren’t raised in righteousness, society bears the brunt of their future decisions.
7. The Child is Vulnerable to the Enemy
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” – 1 Peter 5:8
A child not trained in God’s Word is spiritually defenseless. The devil targets such children through bad influences, social media, music, false ideologies, and peer pressure. Without the armor of God's Word, they fall prey to deception. Satan is strategic—he knows that influencing a child early is easier than converting an adult later. It is the role of the parent to stand guard spiritually over their child’s soul.
8. Parents May Be Held Accountable by God
“When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning… his blood will I require at thine hand.” – Ezekiel 3:18
Parents are spiritual watchmen. To ignore that role is to risk judgment. God holds us accountable for what we teach—or fail to teach—our children. It is not enough to provide food, clothing, and education. If we neglect their eternal soul, we fail our greatest assignment. God will ask us: “What did you do with the children I gave you?”
Biblical Examples of Parental Neglect
1. Eli the Priest
Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were corrupt priests. They abused their office, took offerings by force, and committed immorality at the Tabernacle. Though Eli warned them lightly, he failed to discipline them. “Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice… and honourest thy sons above me…” – 1 Samuel 2:29
As a result, God judged Eli’s household with death and disgrace.
2. King David and Adonijah
David’s son, Adonijah, tried to take the throne without permission. “And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so?” – 1 Kings 1:6
David failed to correct his son’s pride, leading to rebellion and Adonijah’s eventual death. Even great leaders like David were not exempt from the consequences of parental negligence.
God’s Standard for Raising Children
God commands us to diligently teach His laws to our children:
“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children… when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way…” – Deuteronomy 6:7
This requires intentional effort, prayer, and consistency. Parenting is not passive—it’s a battlefield for the soul of the next generation.

Godly parenting is not optional—it’s a sacred duty. When we neglect to train our children in the ways of God, the consequences can be devastating: rebellion, sin, broken families, lost destinies, and divine judgment. However, there is always hope. God can redeem our efforts when we surrender to Him, repent for past neglect, and choose to be faithful from today forward.
