How do I know if I am really speaking in tongues?

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift that the Bible describes as a supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to speak in a language unknown to the speaker. It can be a human or heavenly language (1 Corinthians 13:1), and its primary purpose is communication with God, spiritual edification, or, at times, a message to others when interpreted.

1. It Comes from the Holy Spirit, Not Human Effort

One of the clearest signs that speaking in tongues is genuine is that it originates from the Holy Spirit, not from imitation or self-effort.

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4)

True tongues are not learned, repeated phrases, or pressure-induced speech. Instead, they come spontaneously as the Spirit leads during deep moments of worship, prayer, or spiritual surrender.

Key Sign: You don’t control or plan it—it flows naturally and spiritually.

2. It Brings Personal Spiritual Edification

Another way to confirm if your experience is genuine is by evaluating how it affects you spiritually.

“He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself...” (1 Corinthians 14:4)

This means tongues should uplift your spirit, deepen your prayer life, and bring spiritual clarity. You may feel stronger in your faith, more connected to God, and more aligned with His will.

Key Sign: You feel spiritually refreshed, peaceful, or convicted in the right direction.

3. It Glorifies God, Not Self

Speaking in tongues must never be about showcasing spirituality or gaining attention. The purpose is to glorify God and bring His presence into focus.

“We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:11)

If what you are speaking leads you (or those who hear you) to worship, praise, or submit to God, then it aligns with the biblical pattern.

Key Sign: It shifts your focus to God, not to impress others.

4. It Is Not Just Repetitive Babbling

While the gift of tongues may sound unintelligible to the natural ear, it is not meaningless repetition. The words or syllables come in a flow that doesn’t feel forced or memorized.

Key Sign: The words feel alive and spiritual, not mechanical or rehearsed.

5. There Is Peace and Assurance in Your Spirit

The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit (Romans 8:16). When the gift is genuine, you will feel a sense of peace and confirmation inside your heart.

Key Sign: A deep, inner knowing or peace that this is of God.

6. It Aligns with the Fruit of the Spirit

Spiritual gifts, including tongues, should produce spiritual fruit over time. If speaking in tongues leads to pride, confusion, or division, it is not of God.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience...” (Galatians 5:22–23)

Key Sign: Over time, you grow in humility, love, and obedience to God.

7. It May Come with Interpretation (in Public)

In public worship or fellowship, tongues may be accompanied by interpretation for the benefit of others.

“If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak... and someone must interpret.” (1 Corinthians 14:27)

But in private prayer, tongues may not need interpretation (1 Corinthians 14:2), because they’re meant for communicating mysteries to God.

What to Do If You’re Unsure

If you’re unsure whether your tongues are real, it’s okay to go to God in honesty and ask for clarity.

Prayer for Confirmation:

“Father, I desire the truth and nothing false. If this gift is truly from You, confirm it by Your Spirit. Let it bring peace, spiritual growth, and alignment with Your Word. If not, remove it and fill me with Your genuine presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Speaking in tongues is a beautiful gift, but not a sign of superiority. It should be received with humility and used for God's glory. If you're speaking in tongues and it meets the biblical signs—Spirit-led, edifying, God-glorifying, and accompanied by inner peace—you can be confident that it's real.
