5 ways to meet Jesus today

Is God and Jesus Christ the same person?

The simple answer is: God and Jesus Christ are not the same person, but Jesus is fully God. This truth is deeply rooted in the Bible and summarized in the doctrine of the Trinity, which teaches that there is one God in three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. They are equal in essence, yet distinct in personhood.

1. The Doctrine of the Trinity

Christianity affirms the oneness of God: Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.

However, within this one Godhead are three distinct persons who are co-equal, co-eternal, and consubstantial (of the same substance).

God the Father – the Creator and sustainer of all things.

God the Son (Jesus Christ) – the Word made flesh.

God the Holy Spirit – the active presence of God in believers.

This does not mean Christians worship three gods (which would be polytheism), but rather one God in three persons—a divine mystery revealed in Scripture.

2. Jesus Is God

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is fully God.

● John 1:1-3, 14 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.

● Colossians 2:9 – “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

● Hebrews 1:3 – “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person…

These verses confirm that Jesus is not a mere prophet or teacher. He is God incarnate—God who took on human flesh to redeem humanity.

3. Jesus and God the Father Are Distinct

Though Jesus is fully God, He is not the Father. The Bible makes a clear distinction between Jesus and the Father in various passages:

● John 6:38 – “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

● Luke 22:42 – “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

In these examples, Jesus speaks to the Father, demonstrating a relationship and distinction. This distinction shows that they are not the same person, although united in purpose and divine nature.

4. All Three Persons at Once

One of the clearest demonstrations of the Trinity and the distinct persons of God is seen at Jesus’ baptism. Matthew 3:16-17 – “And Jesus, when he was baptized... the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove... And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

          Here, we see:

● Jesus the Son being baptized.

● The Holy Spirit descending.

● The Father speaking from heaven.

All three are active at the same time, yet they are one God.

5. Why It Matters

Understanding that God and Jesus are not the same person but are one in essence helps us:

● Understand the Gospel: Only someone who is fully God and fully man could pay for our sins.

● Relate to God: We see the love of the Father, the sacrifice of the Son, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

● Deepen our faith: The doctrine of the Trinity, though complex, leads us into a richer worship and appreciation of God's nature.

To say “Jesus is God” is absolutely true. To say “Jesus is the same person as God the Father” is incorrect. They are both God, but distinct in person. The Father sent the Son, the Son obeyed, and the Holy Spirit revealed the truth of this mystery to our hearts.

This divine unity and personal distinction reveal the greatness of God and the beauty of His plan of redemption. It is a mystery, yes—but a revealed one that invites us into a relationship with the Triune God.
