Signs of fake speaking in tongues

Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift from the Holy Spirit, first seen in the early church on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2). It is a form of divine communication used for prayer, worship, and the edification of the believer or church (1 Corinthians 14:2, 4). However, just as there is the genuine move of the Spirit, Scripture also warns that deception and counterfeit manifestations can occur (Matthew 7:22–23, 1 John 4:1). Understanding the signs of fake speaking in tongues helps believers stay grounded in truth and walk in the Spirit with discernment.

1. No Interpretation in Public Settings

"If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret." — 1 Corinthians 14:27

When tongues are spoken publicly without interpretation, it violates biblical order. Fake manifestations often disregard this rule. Genuine tongues in the assembly must be accompanied by interpretation so that the church is edified. Otherwise, it becomes confusion, not edification (1 Corinthians 14:28).

2. Fleshly Repetition and Gibberish

In Acts 2, those filled with the Holy Spirit spoke in languages understood by others (Acts 2:6). Fake tongues often involve meaningless syllables repeated excessively without variation or spiritual depth.

Matthew 6:7 warns, “When you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the heathen do.

True tongues are Spirit-inspired, not mindless chanting. Repetitive, flesh-driven speech meant to mimic spiritual utterance may signal false tongues.

3. Taught or Imitated Tongues

“But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” — 1 Corinthians 12:11

The gift of tongues is not taught by man. It is a spontaneous work of the Holy Spirit. In some places, people are encouraged to imitate others or repeat after leaders to "learn" tongues. This undermines the Spirit’s sovereignty and risks counterfeit results.

4. No Fruit of the Spirit

“You will know them by their fruits.” — Matthew 7:16

See also: Galatians 5:22–23

True spiritual gifts must be accompanied by the fruit of the Spirit. A person who speaks in tongues but displays hatred, pride, or rebellion may not be operating under the Holy Spirit. A lack of love, humility, or obedience is a major sign of deception.

5. Disorder and Disruption

“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.” — 1 Corinthians 14:33

In many services, fake tongues are shouted, disruptive, and chaotic. Biblical tongues operate in peace, order, and under authority. If someone claims they cannot control themselves while speaking in tongues, it contradicts the Word, which says the “spirits of prophets are subject to the prophets” (1 Corinthians 14:32).

6. Exalting Self Over Christ

“He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” — John 16:14

The Holy Spirit always glorifies Jesus. False tongues may draw attention to the speaker rather than to Christ. If someone boasts about their tongues or uses them to seem more spiritual, the motive may be pride, not the Spirit.

7. No Spiritual Growth or Understanding

    “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…” — 1 Corinthians 14:4

True speaking in tongues brings personal edification, intimacy with God, and deeper spiritual hunger. Fake tongues do not lead to a life of prayer, repentance, or hunger for the Word. They produce noise without transformation.

8. False Prophetic Tongues with No Accountability

Some use tongues followed by unscriptural “interpretations” to control or manipulate others. This is dangerous and deceptive. All prophecies or interpretations must align with Scripture. 1 Thessalonians 5:21: “Test all things; hold fast what is good.”

How to Guard Against Fake Tongues

● Stay rooted in God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

● Pray for the gift of discernment (1 Corinthians 12:10)

● Judge spiritual manifestations by their fruit and alignment with Scripture

● Submit to sound spiritual leadership

● Seek the Giver (Holy Spirit), not just the gift

Prayer for Discernment

Heavenly Father, grant me wisdom and spiritual discernment. Let me not be deceived by false manifestations. Fill me with Your Spirit and guide me in truth. Let all spiritual gifts in my life glorify Jesus and edify the body of Christ. Amen.
