Why does the enemy attack marriages?

The enemy attacks marriages because marriage is one of God's most sacred institutions—a divine covenant that reflects His relationship with His people. From a biblical perspective, Satan targets marriages to undermine God's design, disrupt families, and hinder the advancement of His kingdom. Below are the biblical reasons why the enemy attacks marriages, along with scriptures and spiritual insights:

1. Marriage Reflects Christ and the Church

Ephesians 5:31-32 (KJV):

"For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church."

Marriage is a spiritual symbol of the union between Christ and His Church. The enemy hates anything that glorifies Christ, so he seeks to distort, divide, and destroy marriages to mar this sacred image.

2. Marriage Produces Godly Offspring

Malachi 2:15 (NIV):

"Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth."

The enemy knows that a godly marriage produces godly children who can continue to advance God's purposes. Attacking marriages disrupts this process and opens the door to generational brokenness.

3. Unity in Marriage Invites God's Blessing

Matthew 18:19 (KJV):

"Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven."

Married couples who are united in prayer and purpose are a powerful force in the spirit realm. The enemy attacks marriages to break agreements and spiritual power, reducing their effectiveness in God's kingdom.

4. Division Weakens the Home

Mark 3:25 (KJV):

"And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand."

Satan loves to sow discord, bitterness, and unforgiveness in marriage because he knows that division weakens the entire household and can lead to collapse if not addressed.

5. The Enemy Hates Covenant Relationships

Genesis 2:24 (KJV):

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."

Marriage is a covenant, not just a contract. Satan thrives in broken covenants. He attacks the foundation of marriage to get couples to break their vows and dishonor God.

6. Marital Strife Hinders Prayer

1 Peter 3:7 (NIV):

"Husbands, in the same way, be considerate as you live with your wives... so that nothing will hinder your prayers."

If the enemy can bring strife into a marriage, he can hinder spiritual growth, block prayers, and limit divine intervention. Satan seeks to disconnect couples from God by disrupting their unity.

7. A Broken Marriage Affects the Church and Society

Proverbs 14:1 (KJV):

"Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands."

Marriage is the foundation of the family, and the family is the foundation of the church and society. By attacking marriages, the enemy aims to destroy communities and destabilize the church’s influence.

8. Marital Love Is a Witness to the World

John 13:35 (KJV):

"By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another."

A godly marriage serves as a testimony of God’s love and grace. When Satan destroys this witness, he discredits the power of Christian faith in the eyes of unbelievers.

9. Marriages Are a Place of Healing and Wholeness

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (KJV):

"Two are better than one... For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow."

Marriage provides emotional, spiritual, and physical support. Satan attacks it to leave individuals isolated, wounded, and vulnerable to further spiritual attacks.

10. Satan Uses Deception and Temptation

2 Corinthians 11:3 (KJV):

"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."

Many marital issues begin with small compromises—bitterness, secret sins, pride, or temptations. Satan subtly introduces distractions and discontentment to break down trust and affection over time.

The enemy attacks marriages because they represent something holy, powerful, and fruitful in the eyes of God. A godly marriage brings glory to the Lord, strengthens the family, empowers prayer, and advances the kingdom of God. Therefore, Satan launches spiritual warfare against couples to frustrate God's plans and purposes.
