7 principles of honour

        Honour is a kingdom principle that runs deeply through Scripture. To honour means to highly esteem, value, or give weight to someone or something. In the Bible, God calls us to live a life of honour — starting with Him and extending to others.

1. Honour Begins with God

    “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.” – Proverbs 3:9 (ESV)

    “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” – Deuteronomy 6:5

        The foundation of all honour starts with God. Everything flows from our reverence and recognition of who God is — Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. Honouring God involves obeying His commandments, loving Him sincerely, and putting Him first in all things. Giving Him the best of our time, talents, and resources is a tangible way to show this honour.

2. Honour Your Parents

    “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12

    “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” – Ephesians 6:1–3

        This command comes with a promise — longevity and well-being. Honour here goes beyond obedience in childhood; it extends to respect, care, and gratitude throughout life. Even Jesus honoured His earthly mother while dying on the cross (John 19:26–27).

3. Honour Authority

    “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God...” – Romans 13:1

    “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” – 1 Peter 2:17

        Honouring those in authority — whether spiritual, civil, or organizational — reflects our honour to God who places people in power. This principle does not demand blind obedience but respectful conduct, even when disagreeing. David honored King Saul, even when Saul sought his life, because Saul was God’s anointed (1 Samuel 24:6).

4. Honour Others Above Yourself

    “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” – Romans 12:10

    “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” – Philippians 2:3

        Honour is not selfish. It requires humility — treating others with dignity, listening to them, and valuing their contributions. Jesus exemplified this when He washed His disciples' feet, showing that the greatest in God’s kingdom is the servant of all.

5. Honour in Giving

    “Honor the Lord with your wealth…” – Proverbs 3:9

    “God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7

        Our giving reveals our honour. When we give God our first and best—not leftovers we declare His worthiness. The widow who gave two small coins gave more than the rich because she gave all she had (Mark 12:41–44). Honour in giving reflects faith, worship, and a heart fully devoted to God.

6. Honour Brings Reward

    “If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.” – John 12:26

    “The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” – Proverbs 15:33

        God does not ignore honour. He rewards those who walk in humility and reverence. Honour opens doors to divine favour, spiritual elevation, and influence. Joseph honoured God in prison and Potiphar’s house — and God honoured him before Pharaoh (Genesis 41:39–41).

7. Honour Is Rooted in the Heart

    “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” – Matthew 15:8

    “As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man.” – Proverbs 27:19

        True honour cannot be faked. It flows from a sincere heart. God is not impressed by external actions alone — He looks at the motive. Honouring with the lips but living in rebellion is hypocrisy. True honour involves love, reverence, and integrity from the inside out.
