Causes of spiritual sleep

Spiritual sleep is a state of spiritual insensitivity or unconsciousness, where a believer is no longer alert to the voice of God, to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, or the dangers of sin and the enemy. It is a dangerous condition because it often happens gradually and silently, leaving a person spiritually vulnerable.

The Bible repeatedly warns us to “watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41), implying that spiritual vigilance is essential. But what leads a believer into this state of slumber?

Below are key biblical causes of spiritual sleep, supported with scriptures, illustrations, and insight to help every believer stay awake and alert in these end times.

1. Sin and Unrepentant Lifestyle

Sin is one of the most common causes of spiritual sleep. When a person continues in sin without genuine repentance, their heart becomes hardened, their conscience is seared, and their sensitivity to the Holy Spirit fades.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30

“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you.” Isaiah 59:2

Example:

Samson’s gradual compromise with sin led him into a spiritual sleep. He thought God was still with him, not realizing the Spirit had departed (Judges 16:20).

2. Loss of Watchfulness and Prayerlessness

Jesus commanded His disciples to “watch and pray” so they wouldn’t fall into temptation. When believers stop praying and watching spiritually, they become spiritually sluggish.

“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

Example:

The disciples in Gethsemane fell asleep while Jesus prayed. This physical sleep was symbolic of their spiritual unpreparedness (Luke 22:45––6).

3. Worldliness and Carnal Distractions

Being consumed by worldly desires and the pleasures of life can lull a believer into spiritual sleep. The cares of this world choke the word of God in a person’s life, rendering them unfruitful.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world… the world is passing away, and the lust of it…” 1 John 2:15–17

“But the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word…” Mark 4:19

Example:

Demas, a former companion of Paul, fell into spiritual sleep because he loved the present world (2 Timothy 4:10).

4. Spiritual Laziness and Slothfulness

A lazy believer, one who neglects the study of the Word, fasting, and service, will eventually fall into spiritual sleep. Spiritual life requires diligence.

“Not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.” Romans 12:11

“A little sleep, a little slumber… so shall your poverty come on you like a prowler.” Proverbs 6:10–11

Example:

The five foolish virgins in Matthew 25 were spiritually lazy and did not prepare extra oil. Their slumber cost them the bridegroom’s arrival.

5. False Security or Spiritual Complacency

When believers feel like they've "arrived" spiritually, or assume they're okay because of past experiences, they can become complacent. This pride can cause spiritual sleep.

“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:12

“You say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’… and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.” Revelation 3:17

Example:

The church of Laodicea believed they were spiritually fine, but Jesus described them as lukewarm and asleep to their true condition (Revelation 3:14–17).

6. Lack of Spiritual Nourishment (Word of God)

When a believer stops feeding on the Word of God, their spirit becomes weak and sleepy. The Word is food for the soul.

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Romans 10:17

Example:

The Bereans were spiritually awake because they studied the Word daily (Acts 17:11). Without this habit, spiritual slumber sets in.

7. Prolonged Delay of Promises

When God's promises seem delayed, discouragement may creep in, leading to spiritual sleep. Hope deferred can make the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12).

“The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.” Matthew 25:5

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap…” Galatians 6:9

Example:

Many people fall away or give up their faith when answers are delayed, becoming passive in their walk with God.

8. Association with Spiritually Dead Company

Bad company can corrupt good habits. Hanging around spiritually cold or compromising believers can influence one into slumber.

“Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits.” 1 Corinthians 15:33

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly…” Psalm 1:1

Example:

Solomon’s many pagan wives turned his heart away from God (1 Kings 11:1–4), leading to spiritual decline.

9. Lack of Spiritual Vision or Purpose

When people do not understand their spiritual calling or lose sight of eternity, they drift into sleep. A lack of vision leads to spiritual decay.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” – Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – Colossians 3:2

Example:

Eli the priest allowed the lamp of God to go out and spiritually slept even as Samuel began to hear God’s voice (1 Samuel 3:1–3).

10. Deception by the Enemy

Satan works hard to lull believers into sleep through distractions, lies, and false peace. He is a deceiver and aims to blind people from the truth.

“But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded…” 2 Corinthians 4:3–4

“For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Matthew 24:24

Example:

Delilah deceived Samson repeatedly until he slept and lost his power. The devil uses similar strategies today.

Final Thoughts: Wake Up from Spiritual Sleep

         The Bible says:

“And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.” Romans 13:11

“Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” Ephesians 5:14

God is calling His people to wake up from spiritual slumber. He desires a church that is alert, watchful, and prepared for the return of Christ. Like the wise virgins, may we keep our lamps burning and our spirits vigilant.
