Signs of spiritual sleep

Spiritual sleep refers to a state in which a person, though physically alive, is spiritually unaware, inactive, or indifferent to the things of God. Just as physical sleep disconnects a person from the external world, spiritual sleep disconnects a believer from divine reality, making them vulnerable to sin, deception, and the enemy’s attacks.

         Romans 13:11 (KJV) says:

“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

This call to awaken implies that spiritual sleep is dangerous, especially in a time where spiritual alertness is crucial. Below are key signs of spiritual sleep according to the Bible, with explanations and scriptures.

1. Lack of Spiritual Discernment

When a person is spiritually asleep, they lose the ability to discern good from evil, truth from error.

         Hebrews 5:14 (NIV)

“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

A spiritually asleep person doesn't recognize spiritual battles, false teachings, or the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This makes them easy prey to deception and manipulation.

2. Loss of Interest in Prayer and the Word

Prayer and Bible study are spiritual lifelines. When someone begins to neglect these, it's a red flag.

Matthew 26:40-41 (KJV)

“What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation…

Jesus rebuked the disciples for their spiritual sleep at a critical moment. When prayer becomes a burden and the Word no longer excites you, spiritual sleep may be creeping in.

3. Spiritual Lukewarmness

Lukewarmness is a clear symptom of spiritual sleep—being neither hot nor cold in one’s walk with God.

Revelation 3:15-16 (KJV)

“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot… So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Spiritual sleep often disguises itself as routine religion without passion, conviction, or transformation.

4. Compromise with Sin

Another sign is the gradual tolerance and acceptance of sinful habits, often justified with excuses or cultural norms.

Ephesians 5:14 (KJV)

“Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

When a believer who once stood against sin begins to indulge in it, thinking it's not a big deal, spiritual slumber is at play.

5. Disconnection from Fellowship and Accountability

Spiritual sleep isolates a person. They drift from fellowship, church gatherings, or spiritual mentors.

Hebrews 10:25 (NIV)

“Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…

The more a person pulls away from godly community, the more vulnerable they become to spiritual decline.

6. Absence of Spiritual Fruit

Jesus said we would know a tree by its fruits (Matthew 7:20). Spiritual sleep halts spiritual productivity—love, joy, peace, patience, and other fruits of the Spirit become absent.

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith…

If your life lacks these attributes consistently, it may indicate spiritual stagnation or sleep.

7. Worldliness and Carnal Desires Take Over

When the things of the world excite a believer more than the things of God, it's a symptom of spiritual sleep.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 (KJV)

“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Watchfulness and sobriety are commands to stay awake spiritually. Worldliness dulls spiritual sensitivity.

8. Indifference Toward the Lost

A spiritually asleep person lacks the burden for souls. Evangelism becomes unimportant.

Proverbs 24:11-12 (NIV)

“Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter…

When the cry of the lost no longer moves your heart, it’s a sign that spiritual sleep has set in.

9. No Sense of Urgency about Eternity

Jesus constantly emphasized readiness and alertness. Spiritual sleep makes eternity seem distant or irrelevant.

Matthew 24:42-44 (KJV)

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”

When someone no longer watches or prepares for Christ’s return, they are spiritually dozing off.

10. Passivity Toward Spiritual Warfare

A spiritually asleep person doesn’t engage in spiritual warfare and becomes unaware of demonic influences or the need to resist the devil.

1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour…

A passive Christian is an easy target for the enemy. Vigilance is only possible when one is awake.

11. Reliance on the Flesh over the Spirit

When a person begins to depend more on human effort, emotions, and intellect than on the Holy Spirit, they’re spiritually drowsy.

Romans 8:6 (NIV)

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

The flesh is deceptive. Walking by the Spirit requires spiritual alertness.

12. Rejection of Godly Warnings or Convictions

A spiritually awake person is sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and repents when convicted. But the one who is asleep ignores correction.

Proverbs 29:1 (KJV)

“He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

When God’s warnings no longer pierce the heart, spiritual sleep has hardened it.

13. Absence of the Fear of the Lord

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Its absence indicates slumber.

Proverbs 14:27 (KJV)

“The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

A spiritually sleeping person treats sacred things lightly, lacks reverence, and disobeys divine instructions.

14. Repeated Dreams or Warnings to Wake Up

Sometimes, God speaks through dreams, messages, or circumstances to call people back to Himself.

Job 33:14-15 (KJV)

“For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night…

These divine warnings are often God’s attempt to awaken a soul drifting into sleep.

15. Unused Spiritual Gifts

When believers neglect the gifts of the Holy Spirit—whether in teaching, serving, interceding, or prophesying—it’s a form of spiritual dormancy.

2 Timothy 1:6 (KJV)

“Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee…

A spiritually awake believer constantly stirs up their gifts for the glory of God.

Biblical Examples of Spiritual Sleep

1. Samson – Slept on Delilah’s lap and lost his strength (Judges 16:19).

2. Jonah – Slept in the ship during a divine storm (Jonah 1:5).

3. The Disciples – Slept in Gethsemane instead of praying (Matthew 26:40).

4. Eutychus – Fell asleep during Paul’s preaching and fell from a window (Acts 20:9).

Each story shows how spiritual sleep can lead to danger, loss, or death if not corrected.

Spiritual sleep is subtle but deadly. It makes believers ineffective, blind, and vulnerable. God is calling His people to wake up, become vigilant, and rekindle their passion for Him.

Romans 13:12 (KJV)

“The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.”
