The term “spiritual wickedness” comes from Ephesians 6:12, a verse that reveals the intense and invisible battle believers face:
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12, KJV)
Spiritual wickedness refers to demonic powers operating in unseen realms, influencing human behavior, culture, governments, and even churches. These powers are behind deception, rebellion, immorality, and every ungodly system that opposes the will of God. This blog explores the meaning of spiritual wickedness in the Bible, its manifestations, biblical examples, and how believers can stand against it.
Understanding “Spiritual Wickedness in High Places”
● “Spiritual wickedness” in Ephesians 6:12 refers to evil supernatural forces working in the spiritual realm, targeting people on earth. These are not human enemies but fallen angels and demons.
● "High places" (Greek: epouraniois) refers to the heavenly realms, not God's dwelling place, but the spiritual atmosphere where demonic forces operate.
● "Wickedness" (Greek: ponēria) implies malicious, evil intent, particularly aimed at corrupting what God has established.
Paul teaches that we’re not merely dealing with human opposition but a structured kingdom of darkness, with levels of authority and power.
The Hierarchy of Evil Forces
Paul outlines a satanic hierarchy in Ephesians 6:12:
1. Principalities – These are territorial spirits or rulers with authority over regions (Daniel 10:13).
2. Powers – Demon spirits that execute satanic plans and manipulate events.
3. Rulers of darkness – These dominate sinful systems in the world: media, politics, education, and entertainment.
4. Spiritual wickedness in high places – The most perverse and malicious spirits focused on corrupting and destroying spiritual institutions and divine order.
Manifestations of Spiritual Wickedness
Spiritual wickedness is not a distant idea—it manifests in various ways today, just as it did in Bible times.
1. Deception and False Teaching
Spiritual wickedness often manifests through false doctrines and heresies. Paul warned Timothy:
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” (1 Timothy 4:1)
These teachings lead people away from truth and into bondage, distorting the gospel and creating counterfeit Christianity.
2. Idolatry and Sorcery
The Bible frequently links spiritual wickedness to idolatry, witchcraft, and sorcery, which open the door to demonic influence.
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft…” (1 Samuel 15:23)
In Exodus and throughout Kings and Chronicles, Israel’s turning to idols brought about demonic oppression and judgment.
3. Rebellion and Pride
Lucifer fell from heaven because of pride and rebellion (Isaiah 14:12–15). These are core traits of spiritual wickedness. Any human system or individual consumed by pride or defiance against God's will is under the influence of this force.
4. Sexual Immorality
In Genesis 6:1–5, fallen angels (interpreted by some as the “sons of God”) corrupted human flesh, leading to great wickedness. Spiritual wickedness fuels sexual perversion and moral decay, as seen in Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19).
5. Violence and Murder
Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning...” (John 8:44)
Spiritual wickedness inspires bloodshed, war, and hatred—working through people who become instruments of evil.
Biblical Examples of Spiritual Wickedness
1. Pharaoh and Egypt
Pharaoh’s resistance to God’s command to release Israel was more than political stubbornness—it was spiritual opposition. Egypt was steeped in sorcery and idol worship.
“For I will pass through the land of Egypt... and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment.” (Exodus 12:12)
God was not just challenging Pharaoh but judging the demonic powers behind Egypt’s idols.
2. King Saul and the Witch of Endor
When Saul sought help from a medium, he broke God's law and subjected himself to spiritual wickedness.
“So Saul died for his transgression… and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit.” (1 Chronicles 10:13)
This act was not just a moral failure but a partnership with demonic forces.
3. Daniel and the Prince of Persia
In Daniel 10, Daniel fasted for 21 days, and the angel said:
“The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me…” (Daniel 10:13)
This was no earthly prince, but a demonic entity resisting angelic intervention—a clear example of spiritual wickedness in high places.
4. Jesus and the Temptation in the Wilderness
Satan tempted Jesus with offers of worldly power (Luke 4:5–7), showing that spiritual wickedness rules over the kingdoms of the earth. Jesus responded with the Word of God, defeating temptation.
5. The Gadarene Demoniac (Mark 5:1–20)
This man was possessed by a legion of demons, showing the terrifying control of spiritual wickedness over a soul. Jesus cast out the demons, restoring his sanity—proof of divine power over spiritual evil.
How to Stand Against Spiritual Wickedness
Though the powers of darkness are real, believers are not powerless. Scripture provides us with powerful tools to overcome spiritual wickedness.
1. The Whole Armor of God
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11)
Paul lists:
● Truth (belt)
● Righteousness (breastplate)
● Gospel of peace (shoes)
● Faith (shield)
● Salvation (helmet)
● The Word of God (sword)
● Prayer (spiritual communication)
Each piece protects the believer and equips them to fight spiritually.
2. The Name and Blood of Jesus
“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony...” (Revelation 12:11)
The blood of Jesus disarms satanic accusations. His name has authority over demons (Philippians 2:10).
3. Walking in the Spirit
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)
A Spirit-led life resists wicked influences and breaks demonic strongholds.
4. Discernment
Spiritual wickedness thrives in ignorance. Believers must discern spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10), test teachings, and be rooted in Scripture to detect error.
5. Fasting and Prayer
Jesus said certain spirits do not go out except by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). These disciplines empower the believer and bring heavenly intervention.
Spiritual wickedness is real, powerful, and pervasive. But the Bible also makes it clear: it is a defeated kingdom.
“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:15)
Jesus triumphed over the powers of darkness on the cross. Through Him, believers are seated in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6), far above all spiritual wickedness. We are not helpless—we are more than conquerors through Christ.
Let us remain sober, watchful, and prayerful—guarding our hearts, walking in truth, and standing firm in the victory Jesus has already won.
