What is forgiveness in the Bible

         In the Bible, forgiveness is a central theme that reflects God’s character and His desire for restored relationships—both between Himself and humanity, and among people. It is the act of pardoning an offender and releasing them from the burden of guilt, resentment, or punishment, even when they may not deserve it.

1. Biblical Definition of Forgiveness

         Forgiveness in the Bible is the deliberate choice to let go of offense and not hold it against someone. The Greek word often translated as forgiveness in the New Testament is "aphesis," meaning to release, let go, or send away. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "nasa" means to lift up or carry away, emphasizing the removal of sin and guilt.

    Psalm 103:12 – "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."

         This verse illustrates how completely God forgives—removing sin from us entirely.

2. God’s Forgiveness

         Forgiveness begins with God. The Bible teaches that all have sinned (Romans 3:23), yet through Jesus Christ, God offers complete forgiveness to those who repent.
