Witchcraft in the Bible means using evil spiritual powers, like spells, magic, fortune-telling, or talking to the dead. God clearly tells His people never to get involved in these things.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 – “Let no one be found among you… who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft… Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
1. Pharaoh’s Magicians – Exodus 7:10–12
When Moses turned his rod into a snake by God’s power, Pharaoh’s magicians did the same using sorcery. But Moses’ snake swallowed theirs.
Witchcraft tries to copy God’s miracles, but God’s power is greater.
2. The Witch of Endor – 1 Samuel 28:7–20
King Saul was afraid and went to a witch to talk to the dead prophet Samuel. God had warned him not to do this. Afterward, Saul died in battle.
Going to witches or mediums brings judgment. We must seek God alone.
1 Chronicles 10:13 – “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord… and consulted a medium.”
3. Jezebel’s Witchcraft – 2 Kings 9:22
Queen Jezebel used manipulation, idolatry, and witchcraft to control people and spread evil.
Witchcraft can be spiritual manipulation and control, not just magic. It pulls people away from God.
4. King Manasseh – 2 Chronicles 33:6
Manasseh, a king of Judah, practiced sorcery, used fortune-tellers, and sacrificed his children to idols. He made Judah sin badly. But later, he repented and turned back to God.
Witchcraft leads to destruction, but God forgives those who repent.
5. Simon the Sorcerer – Acts 8:9–24
Simon used magic to amaze people. When he saw the apostles healing through the Holy Spirit, he tried to buy the power of God.
God’s power cannot be bought or faked. Magic and pride must be left behind.
Acts 8:22 – “Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord…”
6. Elymas the Sorcerer – Acts 13:6–11
Elymas tried to stop a man from believing in Jesus. Paul rebuked him, and he became blind for a time.
Witchcraft fights against the gospel, but God always wins.
Acts 13:10 – “You are a child of the devil… will you never stop perverting the ways of the Lord?”
7. Magic Books Burned – Acts 19:18–20
People in Ephesus who practiced witchcraft burned their magic scrolls after believing in Jesus. The value of the scrolls was very high, but they chose God over money.
When we truly follow Jesus, we must cut off all forms of witchcraft completely.
God’s Warning Against Witchcraft
The Bible clearly says don’t touch witchcraft at all. This includes horoscopes, fortune-telling, talking to the dead, using spells or charms, or consulting spiritists.
Leviticus 19:31 – “Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them.”
Galatians 5:20–21 – Witchcraft is a “work of the flesh,” and those who practice it won’t inherit God’s kingdom.
Witchcraft might look exciting or powerful, but it leads people away from God and into spiritual danger. We must stay close to Jesus, walk in the Holy Spirit, and avoid all forms of darkness.
James 4:7 – “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
