When you first gave your life to Christ, you probably felt excited, full of joy, and ready to serve God. That is the spiritual fire — the passion and hunger for God’s presence. But over time, challenges, distractions, and sin can make this fire grow weak.
Paul told Timothy:
“Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you…” 2 Timothy 1:6
God gives the fire, but it is our responsibility to keep it burning.
1. Know Where the Fire Comes From
Your spiritual fire comes from God through the Holy Spirit. On the day of Pentecost, the disciples saw tongues of fire (Acts 2:3-4) resting on them, filling them with power. Jeremiah said God’s word was a fire in his bones (Jeremiah 20:9).
The fire is a gift, but you must guard it carefully. Just like a candle in the wind needs protection, your spiritual fire needs attention.
2. Avoid Lukewarmness
One danger to the fire is becoming lukewarm — neither hot nor cold for God (Revelation 3:15-16). In the parable of the ten virgins, some ran out of oil and missed the bridegroom (Matthew 25:8).
Don’t let your passion for prayer, Bible reading, or serving fade. If you notice yourself becoming spiritually lazy, cry out to God to revive you.
3. Feed the Fire with God’s Word
Just like a fire needs fuel, your spirit needs the Word of God. The more you read and meditate on the Bible, the more your fire grows.
Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Luke 24:32 – The disciples said, “Were not our hearts burning within us… as He opened the Scriptures to us?”
Read your Bible daily, not just when you feel like it. God’s Word keeps your heart burning with love for Him.
4. Pray and Worship Continually
Prayer and worship are like oxygen to your spiritual fire. Without them, your fire will die.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing.”
Acts 16:25 – Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns in prison, and God moved mightily.
Make time to talk to God every day. Worship Him not only in church but also at home, in your heart, and in your actions.
5. Stay Connected to Other Believers
A single piece of coal cools quickly, but when it is in a group, it stays hot. Fellowship with other believers keeps your fire alive.
Hebrews 10:24-25 – Do not give up meeting together; encourage one another.
Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Surround yourself with Christians who love God and will inspire you to grow.
6. Live in Obedience to God
Disobedience and sin quench the Spirit’s fire (1 Thessalonians 5:19). Holiness, on the other hand, makes your fire shine brighter.
2 Corinthians 7:1 – Purify yourself from anything that contaminates your body or spirit.
Psalm 24:3-4 – Only those with clean hands and a pure heart can stand in God’s presence.
Ask God daily to help you live a holy life.
7. Share Your Fire with Others
The more you share your faith, the more your fire grows. Tell others about Jesus, serve in your church, and encourage those who are weak in faith.
Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others.”
1 Peter 3:15 – Always be ready to explain the hope you have.
Your light can inspire others to seek God.
Prayer Points
1. Lord, set my heart on fire for You and never let it go out.
2. Deliver me from spiritual laziness and help me to love You more each day.
3. Fill me with fresh hunger for Your Word and Your presence.
4. Give me the grace to pray and worship continually.
5. Surround me with believers who will keep me encouraged.
Keeping your fire burning is a daily choice. In the Old Testament, the priests had to put wood on the altar every morning so the fire would not go out (Leviticus 6:12). In the same way, you must daily add fuel through prayer, worship, Bible study, obedience, and fellowship.
When your fire is burning brightly, you will be strong in trials, full of joy, and able to shine God’s light to the world.
