From the beginning of creation, God gave man a divine assignment. Man was not placed on earth to live without direction, but to walk in fellowship with God and carry out responsibilities that reflect God’s will. In the home, in society, and in his personal walk with God, the Bible outlines the duties that every man must uphold. These responsibilities are not burdens but divine callings that bring order, blessing, and fruitfulness.
Let us look into the major responsibilities of a man according to the Bible.
1. To Fear and Obey God
The foundation of a man’s life is his relationship with God. Scripture makes it clear that the duty of man begins with reverence and obedience to his Creator.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 – “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
Deuteronomy 10:12 – “And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”
A man who fears God becomes a channel of blessing to his family and society. Abraham is a great example—God could trust him because he feared Him and walked in obedience (Genesis 22:12).
2. To Lead His Family in the Way of the Lord
Man is called to be the head of his household, not as a dictator but as a spiritual guide. His leadership should reflect Christ’s love, wisdom, and humility.
Ephesians 5:23 – “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”
Genesis 18:19 – “For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord.”
Joshua made this responsibility clear when he declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). A man who leads spiritually influences generations for Christ.
3. To Love His Wife Sacrificially
Marriage places a great responsibility on the man: to love his wife unconditionally. The love required is not selfish or conditional but sacrificial, reflecting Christ’s love for the church.
Ephesians 5:25 – “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
Colossians 3:19 – “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.”
This responsibility involves faithfulness, honor, respect, and protection. Just as Christ laid down His life, the husband must put his wife’s well-being above his own interests.
4. To Provide for His Household
Provision is one of the clearest biblical responsibilities of a man. A husband and father is called to ensure that the needs of his family are met.
1 Timothy 5:8 – “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
Proverbs 13:22 – “A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children.”
This provision is not limited to financial support but includes emotional stability, spiritual nourishment, and moral guidance. Just as God is Jehovah Jireh (the Provider), men are called to reflect His character in their homes.
5. To Raise Children in the Way of the Lord
One of the greatest legacies a man can leave is godly children. Fathers are instructed to train their children in discipline and the knowledge of God.
Ephesians 6:4 – “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
King David instructed Solomon to walk in God’s ways (1 Kings 2:2-3). Today, fathers still carry this responsibility of shaping their children’s faith and character.
6. To Work and Exercise Dominion
Work was given to man before the fall of Adam. It is not a punishment but a divine responsibility. Man is called to be productive and a steward of God’s creation.
Genesis 2:15 – “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.”
2 Thessalonians 3:10 – “If any would not work, neither should he eat.”
Through honest labor, men provide for their families, serve society, and glorify God. Joseph is an example of a diligent worker who rose from slavery to leadership because of his faithfulness (Genesis 39:2-4).
7. To Walk in Integrity and Justice
A man’s life should be marked by honesty, humility, and righteousness. He is called to be an example in society, standing for justice and truth.
Micah 6:8 – “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Proverbs 20:7 – “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.”
Men like Daniel and Joseph are biblical models of integrity. They stood firm in righteousness even when it was costly, leaving a legacy of faithfulness.
The responsibilities of a man according to the Bible are clear: he is to fear and obey God, lead his family spiritually, love his wife sacrificially, provide for his household, raise godly children, work diligently, and walk in integrity. These responsibilities are not optional but are God’s divine design for manhood.
When men live by these biblical principles, they bring glory to God, stability to their homes, and righteousness to society. True manhood is not measured by strength, wealth, or status, but by faithfulness to God’s Word and responsibility to those entrusted to them.
