How to access our inheritance in Christ

 

     One of the greatest blessings of being a Christian is knowing that we are not left as orphans in this world. We are children of God, and as His children, we are heirs to an eternal inheritance. The Bible says in Ephesians 1:11, “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.”

     But here is the challenge: many Christians live as though they have no inheritance. They struggle, worry, and even beg for what God has already provided. Just like someone with a huge bank account who never makes a withdrawal, we can live beneath our privilege if we don’t know how to access what belongs to us in Christ.

     This guide will walk us through what our inheritance in Christ is, and more importantly, how to access it in practical, spiritual ways.

1. Understanding the Nature of Our Inheritance

     Inheritance in the natural sense comes because of family ties. A son or daughter does not need to beg to inherit; it comes by right of relationship. The same applies spiritually. Through Christ, we are adopted into God’s family, and everything that belongs to the Father is made available to His children.

Romans 8:16-17 says: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”

     This means that what belongs to Christ belongs to us as well. Eternal life, peace, authority over darkness, healing, divine provision, and the hope of heaven are all part of our inheritance. But inheritance is not automatic—it must be received, believed, and walked in.

2. How to Access Our Inheritance in Christ

a) By Faith in Christ Alone

     Faith is the key that unlocks our inheritance. Until you are in Christ, you cannot have access to what He has purchased. Colossians 1:12-14 explains that God has qualified us through Christ, delivering us from darkness into His kingdom.

     I remember the moment I stopped trying to “earn” God’s blessings through my own righteousness. For years, I thought if I prayed more, fasted harder, or lived better, then I would deserve God’s blessings. But the day I realized it is faith in Jesus and His finished work, my Christian life changed. Faith brings us into the family, and faith helps us receive what belongs to the family.

b) Through the Word of God

     The Word of God is like the written will of the Father. If someone leaves an inheritance, you don’t just assume what’s yours—you read the will to see what has been given.

Acts 20:32 says: “I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”

     Every promise in Scripture is a statement of our inheritance. Healing (Isaiah 53:5), peace (John 14:27), provision (Philippians 4:19), authority (Luke 10:19), and eternal life (John 3:16) are written clearly for us to claim.

     In my own journey, it wasn’t until I began to pray God’s promises back to Him that things changed. For example, when fear overwhelmed me, I clung to 2 Timothy 1:7 and declared, “God has not given me the spirit of fear.” Slowly, the chains of fear broke, and I began to walk in freedom.

c) By the Holy Spirit

     Our inheritance is not just words on paper—it becomes alive through the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:16 reminds us that the Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

     Think of the Holy Spirit as the one who takes what is in heaven’s storehouse and delivers it to us. He opens our eyes to understand spiritual truth and empowers us to walk in it. Without Him, the inheritance feels distant; with Him, it becomes personal and real.

     There were times when I read promises in the Bible but felt they were not for me. But during prayer, the Holy Spirit whispered, “This is yours.” That confirmation changes everything.

d) Through Obedience and Righteous Living

     Esau despised his birthright and sold it for a mere meal (Hebrews 12:16). This shows us that inheritance can be wasted or neglected. Sin and disobedience block us from enjoying what is ours.

     Whenever I drifted from obedience, I noticed a loss of peace and spiritual joy. It wasn’t that God took my inheritance away—it was that sin made me unable to enjoy it. Walking in obedience keeps the channel open for God’s blessings to flow freely.

e) Through Prayer and Declaration

     Prayer is how we claim what is ours. James 4:2 says: “You do not have because you do not ask.” Prayer is not begging but enforcing our rights as heirs.

     When facing lack, instead of despairing, I have learned to pray boldly: “Father, You said You will supply all my needs according to Your riches in glory. I receive that provision today.” Speaking God’s Word over your situation activates faith and brings heaven’s inheritance into earthly reality.

f) Through Patience and Endurance

     Some aspects of our inheritance are instant (salvation, peace with God), but others require patience. Hebrews 6:12 says we inherit the promises through faith and patience.

     I can recall seasons of waiting, especially when trusting God for provision. At times it felt delayed, but later I realized God was strengthening my faith muscle. Waiting is not denial; it is preparation for greater testimony.

3. What Our Inheritance in Christ Includes

     Here are some of the treasures that belong to us as God’s children:

● Eternal Life – John 5:24

● Peace of Christ – John 14:27

● Authority over the enemy – Luke 10:19

● Healing and Deliverance – Isaiah 53:5, Matthew 8:17

● The Holy Spirit – Acts 2:38-39

● Divine Provision – Philippians 4:19

● Victory over sin – Romans 6:14

● A Heavenly Home – John 14:2-3

     This list is not exhaustive, but it reveals the riches we have in Christ.

4. Prayer Points to Access Our Inheritance

1. Thanksgiving for our inheritance

   “Father, thank You for making me an heir of Your kingdom through Christ Jesus.”

2. Prayer for revelation

   “Lord, open my eyes to see and understand the riches of my inheritance in You (Ephesians 1:18).”

3. Faith declaration

   “I claim peace, healing, and provision in Christ Jesus. I refuse to live in fear or lack.”

4. Obedience and holiness

   “Father, help me to walk in obedience so that nothing blocks me from enjoying what belongs to me.”

5. Strength in waiting

   “Lord, give me patience and endurance as I wait for the fullness of Your promises.”

     Accessing our inheritance in Christ is not about striving but about believing. It is not about begging but about walking confidently as sons and daughters of the King.

     Imagine a prince living as a beggar because he doesn’t know his father is the king. That is how many Christians live today. But God’s Word invites us to rise up, know who we are in Christ, and take hold of what belongs to us.

     Everything we need for life and godliness has already been given (2 Peter 1:3). Our role is to believe it, receive it, and live it out.
