Introduction: When Faith Becomes Comfortable but Powerless
One of the most alarming warnings in the New Testament is found in Revelation 3:16, where Jesus speaks directly to the church of Laodicea:
“So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.”
These are not the words of an angry stranger but of a loving Savior whose heart is broken when His children drift into spiritual indifference. Lukewarm Christianity is subtle. It creeps into the heart quietly, without noise or warning. It is not open rebellion. It is not an outright rejection of God. It is something more dangerous—a silent spiritual sickness that feels safe but kills slowly.
This teaching is to help you recognize the signs, dangers, and spiritual consequences of lukewarm faith—and to invite you back into the fire of God’s presence.
Understanding What “Lukewarm” Really Means
To understand lukewarm Christianity, we first need to understand the background of Laodicea. The city had no natural water source. Water had to be transported through aqueducts from nearby places: hot water came from Hierapolis, known for its healing springs; cold water came from Colossae, known for refreshing streams.
By the time the water reached Laodicea, it became lukewarm—neither healing nor refreshing. It was unfit for drinking.
Jesus used this picture to describe the spiritual condition of the church.
● Hot = Spiritual passion, zeal, devotion, burning desire for God.
● Cold = Spiritually lost, but aware of your need for God.
● Lukewarm = Comfortable, complacent, half-committed, spiritually dull.
God can work with “hot” believers. He can transform the “cold.” But the lukewarm believer is deceived into thinking he is fine—so he does not seek change.
The Tragedy of Lukewarm Christianity
A. Lukewarm Christianity Produces Spiritual Blindness
In Revelation 3:17 Jesus says:
“You say, I am rich, increased with goods, and have need of nothing; but you don’t know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.”
Lukewarm believers think they are doing well spiritually. They attend church occasionally, pray when they feel like it, and read the Bible when convenient. They know the language of Christianity, but lack the life of Christianity.
The tragedy is not that they are weak—but that they don’t know they are weak. Not that they are empty—but that they don’t know they are empty.
B. Lukewarm Christianity Makes Jesus Sick
Jesus says, “I will spew you out of my mouth.”
This is the most shocking image in the entire passage. Why would Jesus use such strong language? Because lukewarm Christianity misrepresents Him.
A nonbeliever knows he does not follow Jesus.
A devoted Christian reflects Jesus. But a lukewarm believer carries His name without His nature. It makes the world confused and the Gospel unattractive.
C. Lukewarm Faith Has No Power Against Temptation
You may notice:
● Temptations become stronger
● Prayer becomes harder
● Worship becomes dry
● Bible reading feels boring
● Church attendance becomes optional
● Spiritual disciplines become burdens instead of blessings
This happens because lukewarm faith is powerless. It has form without fire. It knows the truth but does not practice it.
Signs of a Lukewarm Christian
Here are some deep and practical signs. These are not to condemn you, but to help you wake up:
1. You love God, but not enough to sacrifice for Him.
You want His blessings, but not His discipline. You want His protection, but not His presence.
2. You are moved by sermons, but not transformed by them.
Your heart is touched on Sunday, but unchanged on Monday.
3. You avoid “extreme” Christianity.
You prefer comfort to commitment. You find excuses instead of making room for God.
4. You pray only when you need something.
Your prayer life is crisis-based instead of relationship-based.
5. You compromise easily with sin.
You don’t reject sin; you manage it. You ask, “How far can I go?” instead of “How holy can I be?”
6. You have no hunger for the Word of God.
Reading the Bible feels like an obligation instead of a delight.
7. You blend into the world.
There is no visible difference in your values, entertainment, speech, or lifestyle.
Why Lukewarm Christianity Is Dangerous
A. It Slowly Kills Your Spiritual Sensitivity
Just like a body becomes numb before it dies, a lukewarm Christian slowly loses:
● conviction
● desire
● spiritual hunger
● discernment
You stop hearing God clearly. You stop recognizing His voice. Your heart becomes hard without you realizing it.
B. It Opens Doors to the Enemy
When the fire goes out, darkness enters. A lukewarm believer becomes spiritually vulnerable, even if outwardly successful.
▪︎ Your spiritual defence weakens.
▪︎ Your peace disappears.
▪︎ Your joy fades.
▪︎ Your authority in Christ is lost.
C. It Destroys Your First Love
Jesus rebuked another church in Revelation:
“You have left your first love.” Revelation 2:4
Lukewarmness replaces devotion with duties. You become busy for God without being close to God.
Christianity becomes routine instead of a relationship.
D. It Does Not Survive Trials
A lukewarm believer collapses when storms come because there is no deep root. Troubles expose your true level of commitment.
If your faith is lukewarm, you may:
● doubt God easily
● complain quickly
● give up spiritually
● blame God for everything
Trials reveal whether your faith is genuine or lukewarm.
How Jesus Heals the Lukewarm Heart
Even though Jesus rebukes the Laodiceans, He does not reject them. His rebuke is actually an invitation to return.
A. Jesus Calls Lukewarm Christians to Repentance
Revelation 3:19 says:
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”
Repentance is not condemnation—it is an expression of God’s love. When God corrects you, it is proof that He wants you back.
B. Jesus Offers Spiritual Riches
In Revelation 3:18, Jesus says:
● “Buy from Me gold refined in fire” — true spiritual wealth.
● “Buy white garments” — purity and righteousness.
● “Anoint your eyes with eye salve” — spiritual discernment.
He is saying:
“Return to Me, and I will restore everything you have lost.”
C. Jesus Stands at the Door of Your Heart
One of the most beautiful verses in the Bible is found here:
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock…” Revelation 3:20
This is not written to unbelievers. Jesus is knocking at the door of the church—at the door of those who once knew Him but drifted.
This shows His mercy. Even when you grow lukewarm, He does not walk away—He waits for you to open.
How to Escape Lukewarm Christianity
This section is extremely important. Here are deep, practical steps to restore your fire:
1. Return to Daily Fellowship with the Holy Spirit
Spend intentional time in God’s presence. Not rushed prayers. Not mechanical Bible reading. Stay long enough until your heart begins to burn again. Restore the Discipline of the Word. Read the Bible consistently, not occasionally. And ask the Holy Spirit to awaken hunger.
● Meditate, don’t just skim.
3. Engage in Fervent Prayer
Prayer is where lukewarmness dies because when you pray deeply, your spirit ignites. Pray until your heart aligns with God’s heart.
4. Separate Yourself from Spiritual Distractions
Lukewarmness often comes from:
● excessive entertainment
● worldly influences
● toxic friendships
● spiritual busyness
● overwork with no quiet time
● Create space for God.
5. Rebuild Your First Love
Remember the days when your heart burned for God. Remember when worship moved you, when sermons convicted you, when you longed for righteousness.
Fan that flame again.
6. Walk in Obedience
Obedience restores fire. Every time you say “yes” to God, a spark ignites. Every time you refuse sin, the flame grows.
7. Surround Yourself with Spirit-filled Believers
Fire burns brighter when surrounded by other flames. Isolation fuels lukewarmness; fellowship fuels passion.
The Blessings of Leaving Lukewarmness Behind
When you return to wholehearted devotion, you will experience:
A. Renewed passion and hunger for God
You will feel alive again, refreshed, restored.
B. Clearer spiritual discernment
Your spiritual eyes open. You hear God more clearly.
C. Victory over sin and temptation
Fire burns away the desires that once controlled you.
D. Fresh anointing and spiritual authority
Your prayers carry weight. Your worship carries power.
E. Deeper peace, joy, and direction
The confusion lifts. The dryness disappears.
F. Intimacy with Jesus restored
This is the true reward—Him.
Conclusion: Choose Fire Over Lukewarmness
Lukewarm Christianity is dangerous not because it looks evil, but because it looks harmless. It is not cold unbelief. It is not passionate faith. It is something in-between—comfortable, casual, but powerless.
But Jesus does not want you to live in “in-between faith.”
He wants your whole heart. The message of Revelation 3:16 is not judgment—it is a loving wake-up call:
“Return to Me. Come back to the fire. You were made for more.”
Today, Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart. Will you open the door and let Him rekindle your fire?
