Every destiny is built on a foundation—spiritual, emotional, generational, or environmental. Some foundations are righteous and align with the covenant of God, while others are corrupted by idolatry, bloodshed, rebellion, curses, and unrepentant sin. The Bible gives us several examples of evil foundations that affected families, cities, nations, and generations—sometimes long after the original sin was committed.
Understanding these foundations gives believers wisdom to break free from hidden battles and build a new legacy in Christ.
Below are major biblical examples of evil foundations—what caused them, how they manifested, and the lessons we must draw from them.
1. Gideon and the Evil Foundation of His Father’s House
Before God used Gideon as a mighty deliverer, He had to confront the evil foundation in his family line.
The Problem: Generational Idolatry
Gideon belonged to a household deeply entangled in idol worship. His father, Joash, had an altar of Baal erected within the family compound. This altar connected the entire family—and even the town—to demonic influence.
Judges 6:25–26 (KJV):
“And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:
And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.”
God did not tell Gideon to fight the Midianites first. He said: Deal with the foundation of your father’s house.
The Manifestation of the Evil Foundation
- Israel suffered continuous oppression
- Their hard labor produced nothing
- Fear ruled the nation
- Gideon himself was hiding from the enemy when God found him
This is what evil foundations do:
- They limit potential
- They frustrate efforts
- They bring cycles of failure and fear
- They open the door for oppression
The Deliverance
Gideon tore down the altar and built a new one to the Lord. A spiritual shift happened. Only after that could he defeat the Midianites.
You cannot rise until you confront and destroy evil foundations tied to your family.
2. Jericho – The Evil Foundation of a Cursed City
Jericho is a classic biblical example of a land or city built on a cursed foundation.
The Problem: A Spoken Curse
After Jericho fell during Joshua’s conquest, Joshua released a prophetic curse over anyone who would rebuild it.
Joshua 6:26 (KJV):
“And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.”
Centuries later, a man tried to rebuild the city—and the curse fell exactly as spoken.
1 Kings 16:34 (KJV):
“In his days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.”
The Manifestation of the Evil Foundation
- Death of children
- Family tragedy
- Unexplained calamity
- Bloodshed is connected to rebuilding the city
Some foundations are tied to curses spoken long before we were born. Many families and nations still battle ancient altars and ancestral curses today.
The Deliverance
Centuries later, the prophet Elisha reclaimed the land spiritually.
2 Kings 2:21 (KJV):
“And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.”
Evil foundations can be inherited but they can also be healed through prophetic intervention and obedience to God.
3. Eli’s House – The Foundation of Rebellion and Dishonor
The house of Eli, the High Priest of Israel, is one of the strongest examples of a priestly foundation corrupted through disobedience, immorality, and sacrilege.
The Problem: Priestly Corruption
Eli’s sons—Hophni and Phinehas—defiled priestly duties. They committed sexual immorality in the temple, stole offerings, and despised the Lord’s sacrifices.
1 Samuel 2:12 (KJV):
“Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord.”
God’s Judgment: A Curse on Their Bloodline
God declared a foundational curse on Eli’s priesthood.
1 Samuel 2:31–33 (KJV):
“Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.”
The Manifestation of the Evil Foundation
- Premature death
- Loss of priestly honor
- Tragedy in a single day
- Generational disgrace
1 Samuel 4 records:
- Eli fell and died
- His two sons died
- His daughter-in-law died in childbirth
- The Ark was captured
The Cause
Not just sin—but refusal to correct sin.
The Deliverance
Samuel replaced Eli’s lineage, fulfilling the prophecy.
Evil foundations can start through:
- Abuse of leadership
- Parental negligence
- Sexual sin
- Disrespect for God’s altar
And such foundations can destroy entire generations.
4. Ahab’s House – The Foundation of Idolatry, Murder, and Witchcraft
The household of Ahab is one of the darkest spiritual foundations in Scripture.
The Problem: Extreme Wickedness
Ahab married Jezebel, a witchcraft queen from Sidon, and introduced Baal worship at a national level.
1 Kings 21:25 (KJV):
“But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.”
Their foundation included:
- Idolatry
- Murder of Naboth
- Sorcery
- National rebellion against God
God’s Judgment
1 Kings 21:21 (KJV):
“Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity…”
1 Kings 21:24 (KJV):
“Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.”
The Manifestation of the Evil Foundation
- Sudden death of Ahab
- Jezebel was thrown down and eaten by dogs
- The death of their sons
- Destruction of their dynasty
This foundation shows how marriage alliances can introduce evil altars into a family.
Who you join yourself to—spiritually or maritally—can determine your foundation and destiny.
5. Jehu’s House – A Foundation That Started Right But Ended Wrong
Jehu was raised by God to destroy the evil foundation of Ahab. He obeyed initially—but later built a foundation that became corrupted.
The Problem: Partial Obedience
Though Jehu destroyed Baal worship, he continued the sins of Jeroboam—idol worship through the golden calves at Dan and Bethel.
2 Kings 10:28–29 (KJV):
“Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel. Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in Dan.”
Jehu’s disobedience laid a new evil foundation—the foundation of partial obedience and mixture.
The Manifestation
God blessed him initially but later judged his lineage.
Hosea 1:4 (KJV):
“And the Lord said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu…”
A foundation that begins well can be corrupted by compromise. Partial obedience is still disobedience.
6. Jeroboam’s House – The Foundation of Spiritual Manipulation
Jeroboam created one of the most dangerous foundations in Scripture—idolatry formed out of fear and insecurity.
1 Kings 12:28–30 (KJV):
“Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
And this thing became a sin…”
Effects of This Evil Foundation
- National apostasy
- Permanent idolatry
- Generational curses
- Destruction of Jeroboam’s house
1 Kings 14:10–11 (KJV):
“Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam… Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat…”
Leadership rooted in insecurity creates long-lasting evil foundations.
7. The House of Saul – The Foundation of Rebellion and Witchcraft
The Problem
Saul repeatedly disobeyed God, was proud, jealous, rebellious, and eventually consulted a witch.
1 Samuel 15:23 (KJV):
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…”
The Manifestation
- The kingdom was torn from its foundation
- His sons died
- His dynasty ended
- He fell on his own sword
Rebellion cracks the foundation of destiny.
What These Examples Teach Us About Evil Foundations
From the stories of Gideon, Jericho, Eli, Ahab, Jehu, Jeroboam, and Saul, we learn that evil foundations arise from:
- Idolatry
- Sexual sin
- Parental negligence
- Leadership corruption
- Murder and bloodshed
- Witchcraft
- Rebellion
- Spoken curses
- Generational iniquity
- Partial obedience
And they manifest through:
- Cycles of defeat
- Barrenness
- Premature death
- Spiritual blindness
- Family fragmentation
- Destruction of destiny
- National calamity
But God never reveals a foundation to condemn us—He reveals it to rebuild us.
How God Breaks Evil Foundations (Summary)
From these stories, we learn the divine pattern:
1. Revelation
▪︎ God shows Gideon the altar
▪︎ God exposes Ahab through Elijah
▪︎ God reveals Jericho’s curse
▪︎ God warns Eli
▪︎ God speaks about Jeroboam
2. Repentance or Judgment
▪︎ Some repent (like Nineveh).
▪︎ Some resist and perish (like Ahab).
3. A New Foundation Is Built
▪︎ Gideon builds a new altar
▪︎ Elisha heals Jericho
▪︎ David replaces Saul
▪︎ Samuel replaces Eli
God does not just destroy evil foundations— He builds righteous ones.
The Bible does not hide the truth: foundations matter. A bad foundation can imprison a destiny, but a righteous one can elevate a generation. Whether inherited or self–created, evil foundations can be destroyed in Christ.
Psalm 11:3 (KJV):
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
The answer is simple: Return to God, confront the foundation, destroy the altars, renounce the patterns, and build again with the Lord.
And He who healed Jericho. Who raised Gideon? Who restored Israel? Who broke Ahab’s dynasty will raise a new foundation in your life.
Amen.
