INTRODUCTION: THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF LIFE
Every generation asks many questions—Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? Yet behind all these questions is a deeper one that shapes every other area of life: Who is God?
The Bible’s answer is not cold information or philosophical theory. Scripture reveals a God who longs to be known, who reaches toward humanity in love, who invites us into a living relationship with Him. Knowing God is not a religious achievement—it is the heartbeat of eternal life. Jesus said:
“This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3
Knowing God is not the same as knowing about God. Many people know facts, verses, or doctrines, yet remain powerless, anxious, and spiritually dry. But to know God personally is to encounter His heart, His character, His presence, His voice, and His power. It is to walk with Him, love Him, and be loved immeasurably by Him.
Let this teaching open your heart to the One who created you, sustains you, and calls you by name.
1. GOD IS THE ETERNAL CREATOR
The first introduction the Bible gives of God is simple yet profound:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
Before time began, God already existed. Before the universe appeared, God was already present.
Before life took shape, God was already working. He is Eternal, with no beginning and no end (Psalm 90:2). He is the One who spoke the universe into existence, who shaped the stars, oceans, animals, and the human soul. Every scientist studies a world that God already designed.
Creation reflects His nature:
- His majesty in the vastness of space
- His beauty in the colors of nature
- His detail in the human body
- His wisdom in the systems of life
- His order in natural laws
Creation is not just a testimony of power; it is a revelation of God’s identity:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” Psalm 19:1
To know God is to recognize Him as the Source of all things and the Sustainer of life.
2. GOD IS HOLY
Among all divine attributes, holiness stands unmatched. Holiness means pure, perfect, set apart, and utterly without sin. No darkness, deception, or corruption can be found in Him.
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” Isaiah 6:3
God’s holiness reveals two things:
1. God is morally perfect.
There is no evil in Him. Everything He does is right and just. He never makes mistakes.
2. God cannot tolerate sin.
Not because He hates people, but because sin destroys everything it touches. Holiness is like fire—beautiful, pure, and life-giving, but dangerous to anything impure.
This is why salvation is necessary. God’s holiness makes sin impossible to ignore, but His love makes redemption available through Christ.
3. GOD IS LOVE
Many people grow up hearing “God is powerful” but never hearing “God is love.” Yet Scripture boldly declares:
“God is love.” 1 John 4:8
Love is not just something God does; it is who He is. God’s entire relationship with humanity is shaped by love:
- He created us out of love.
- He pursues us despite our failures.
- He sent His Son to save us (John 3:16).
- He adopts us into His family (Romans 8:15).
- He promises to never leave nor abandon us (Hebrews 13:5).
His love is not emotional sentiment—it is sacrificial, relentless, patient, and eternal. No matter how far one strays, His love reaches deeper still.
4. GOD IS MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS
If God gave us what we deserved, none of us would stand. But the Bible says:
“The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love…” Exodus 34:6
God’s mercy means He withholds the judgment we deserve. God’s grace means He gives us blessings we do not deserve.
Throughout Scripture:
- He forgave Israel repeatedly.
- He restored King David.
- He gave Jonah another chance.
- He rescued the thief on the cross.
Mercy and grace reveal the tenderness and compassion of God. He is not quick to condemn but quick to forgive. He knows our weaknesses and invites us to come boldly (Hebrews 4:16).
5. GOD IS JUST
Love and justice are not opposites in God—they are intertwined. God’s justice means He does what is right, fair, and true.
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne.” Psalm 89:14
Because God is just:
- He defends the vulnerable
- He punishes wickedness
- He brings consequences when needed
- He will judge the world with fairness
Many wonder, if God is good, why does He judge sin? But a God who never punishes evil would not be good—He would be unjust. Justice is not revenge. It is God defending what is right, healing what is broken, and setting all things in order.
6. GOD IS OMNIPRESENT — EVERYWHERE AT ONCE
You cannot run from Him, escape Him, or hide from Him.
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?” Psalm 139:7
God fills heaven and earth. He is present in:
- Your home
- Your workplace
- Your struggles
- Your confusion
- Your silent tears
- Your victories
- Your worship
This means you are never alone, even when you feel abandoned. His presence is your greatest comfort.
7. GOD IS OMNISCIENT — ALL-KNOWING
God knows everything:
- Every thought before you think it
- Every word before you speak it
- Every decision before you make it
- Every need before you pray it
“Great is our Lord… His understanding is infinite.” Psalm 147:5
Nothing surprises God. Nothing confuses Him. Nothing is hidden from Him. This should not scare you—it should free you. You never need to pretend with God. You can be honest, broken, vulnerable, and real. He already sees everything and still chooses to love you.
8. GOD IS OMNIPOTENT — ALL-POWERFUL
The strongest human, the largest army, the greatest nation—none compares to His power.
“For nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37
God’s power created the universe and raised Jesus from the dead. His power can:
- Break generational curses
- Heal diseases
- Restore families
- Transform stubborn hearts
- Provide supernaturally
- Deliver from demonic bondage
- Open closed doors
- Silence storms
The power of God is not historical or theoretical—it is available today.
9. GOD IS A FATHER
To many, God is distant or angry. But Jesus revealed something revolutionary: God is a Father.
Not a harsh father. Not an absent father. Not an unpredictable father. But a perfect Father:
“Our Father in heaven…” Matthew 6:9
A Father who:
- Loves without condition
- Corrects with compassion
- Provides with generosity
- Protects with strength
- Listens with patience
- Guides with wisdom
God does not just want obedience—He wants a relationship. Running to God is running into the arms of a Father who waits with joy.
10. GOD IS THE SAVIOR THROUGH JESUS CHRIST
God did not leave humanity in sin. He came down Himself in the person of Jesus Christ:
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” John 1:14
Jesus is not merely a prophet, teacher, or miracle-worker. He is God in a human body—the perfect revelation of who God is (Colossians 1:15).
Through Jesus:
- God showed His love
- God revealed His heart
- God conquered sin
- God destroyed the power of death
- God opened the way to eternal life
To know God, you must know Jesus. Everything God wants us to understand about Himself, He revealed through Christ.
11. GOD IS SPIRIT
Jesus told the Samaritan woman:
“God is Spirit.” John 4:24
This means God is not limited by flesh, walls, distance, or form. He is not an idol, a statue, or an image. He is a divine Spirit, able to dwell within believers through the Holy Spirit.
Because God is Spirit:
- You can know Him personally
- You can experience His presence
- You can hear His voice
- You can be led, taught, and transformed from within
The Holy Spirit makes God real, not theoretical.
12. GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE
This speaks of His purity, His passion, and His power to destroy anything that opposes Him.
“Our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:29
He burns away sin, pride, idols, and darkness. His fire purifies, empowers, and revives. God’s fire is not destructive to His children—it refines them like gold.
13. GOD IS FAITHFUL
God is not like humans who promise and fail. Every word He speaks is true and reliable.
“He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23
His faithfulness means:
- He finishes what He starts
- He keeps every promise
- He never changes His mind
- He remembers your prayers
- He honors your sacrifices
- He stands with you in every season
You can build your life on His faithfulness and never be disappointed.
14. GOD IS JEALOUS (IN A HOLY WAY)
This may sound unusual, but Scripture says:
“I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.” Exodus 20:5
God’s jealousy is not insecurity—it is protective love. Like a husband desires faithfulness from his wife, God desires your heart to be free from idols. Anything that takes His place—money, pleasure, people, fame—hurts your soul. God’s jealousy is His commitment to keep you safe and close.
15. GOD DESIRES A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP
Above all titles and attributes, the greatest truth is this: God wants to be known. Not from a distance. Not through religion. But personally, intimately, daily.
He invites you:
- “Come to Me…” (Matthew 11:28)
- “Draw near to God…” (James 4:8)
- “Call to Me and I will answer…” (Jeremiah 33:3)
The entire Bible is a love story of God pursuing humanity.
HOW TO KNOW THIS GOD PERSONALLY
Knowing God begins with Jesus Christ, continues through the Holy Spirit, and deepens through relationship. Here are four keys:
1. Receive Jesus as Lord and Savior (John 1:12)
This reconnects you to God’s heart and wipes away your sin.
2. Spend time in the Word
The Bible is God revealing Himself in written form.
3. Pray sincerely and consistently
Talk to God like a Father. Listen for His voice. Share your heart.
4. Walk in obedience
Obedience unlocks intimacy, clarity, and spiritual authority.
CONCLUSION: GOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW HIM
God is not hiding from you. He is not distant, cold, silent, or uninterested. He is closer than your breath and more loving than your mind can imagine.
Who is God? He is Creator, Father, Savior, Judge, Redeemer, and Friend. He is holy, powerful, loving, merciful, and faithful. He is the God who sees you, knows you, and calls you by name. He is the God who invites you into a relationship that will change your life and eternity.
Open your heart. Let Him reveal Himself. Let Him draw you deeper. Let Him be your everything.
