Authority of the Believer in Christ: What Does the Bible Say?

"Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Luke 10:19 (NKJV)

Many Christians live far below the life God intended for them. They love Jesus, attend church, read the Bible, and pray, yet they constantly struggle with fear, doubt, condemnation, and spiritual defeat. They know God is powerful, but they are uncertain about what He has given them as His children.

      Questions often arise:

  • "Do believers really have spiritual authority?"
  • "What did Jesus mean when He said, 'I give you authority'?"
  • "Can Christians stand against the enemy without fear?"

The Bible answers these questions with remarkable clarity. The authority of the believer is not a special gift reserved for pastors, apostles, or spiritual leaders. It is a privilege that belongs to every person who has placed their faith in Jesus Christ. However, this authority is often misunderstood. Some ignore it completely, while others misuse it by turning it into a display of personal power.

Biblical authority is neither arrogance nor self-confidence. It is the humble confidence that comes from knowing who Jesus is and understanding who we are because we belong to Him.

What Is the Authority of the Believer?

Simply put, the authority of the believer is the spiritual right and privilege given by Jesus Christ to His followers to live under His victory, resist the enemy, proclaim the Gospel, and carry out God's will on earth.

Authority is different from power. A police officer may not possess the physical strength to stop a speeding truck, but the badge he carries represents the authority of the government behind him. Likewise, Christians do not overcome darkness because they are personally powerful. They overcome because they stand under the authority of Christ.

Our confidence is not in ourselves. Our confidence is in the One who said:

"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth." (Matthew 28:18)

The Source of Our Authority

The believer's authority begins and ends with Jesus. Before His ascension, Jesus declared that all authority belonged to Him. That means there is no kingdom, no ruler, no demon, and no spiritual force outside His control. This truth is beautifully expressed in Colossians 2:10:

"And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power."

Because Christ is the Head over every spiritual authority, those who belong to Him share in His victory. This does not make believers equal with Christ. Rather, it means that we live and minister under His lordship. To understand more deeply why believers can stand confidently against spiritual darkness, read our complete study on Christ's authority over every principality and power, which explains the foundation of all spiritual authority in the Christian life.

Our authority is delegated authority. Just as an ambassador speaks on behalf of the nation that sent him, Christians represent the Kingdom of God in this world.

Luke 10:19—Understanding Jesus' Promise

One of the most quoted verses about spiritual authority is Luke 10:19:

"Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy."

Jesus spoke these words after seventy disciples returned with joy because even demons submitted to His name.

The imagery of serpents and scorpions is often understood symbolically, representing the destructive and deceptive works of the enemy. Jesus was assuring His followers that the forces of darkness would not ultimately overcome them. However, it is important to understand that this passage does not encourage recklessness or pride.

Jesus immediately redirected their focus by saying:

"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven." (Luke 10:20)

Our greatest joy is not our authority. Our greatest joy is our salvation.

The Authority of the Believer Is Rooted in Relationship

One of the biggest mistakes people make is treating spiritual authority like a formula. Some imagine that repeating certain words automatically guarantees victory. But biblical authority flows from relationship with Christ. Jesus said in John 15:5:

"Without Me you can do nothing."

A branch has life only because it remains connected to the vine. Likewise, believers exercise authority only as they abide in Jesus.

Prayer, worship, obedience, and studying God's Word are not religious duties. They are the means by which we remain close to the One who gives us strength. Because God's Word strengthens faith, exposes deception, and guides believers in truth, every Christian should understand the biblical importance of knowing God's Word for spiritual growth and daily living.

1. Authority Over Fear

Fear is one of Satan's most effective weapons. He whispers that God has abandoned us or that our problems are too great. But God's Word says:

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)

Believers have the authority to reject the lies of fear and stand on God's promises.

2. Authority to Resist the Devil

James 4:7 gives one of the clearest instructions in Scripture:

"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Notice that resistance comes after submission. The believer's authority is effective because it operates under God's authority.

When we walk in obedience, the enemy cannot ultimately prevail against us. If you want practical biblical guidance on applying this truth in daily spiritual warfare, explore our step-by-step guide to exercising spiritual authority against the enemy through Jesus' name.

3. Authority to Proclaim the Gospel

Jesus commissioned His followers to make disciples of all nations. The authority He gives is not merely defensive. It is also for advancing His Kingdom.

Every believer has the privilege of sharing the hope of Christ with a hurting world. The Gospel itself carries the power of God for salvation.

4. Authority Through Prayer

Prayer is one of the greatest expressions of spiritual authority. When believers pray according to God's will, they are partnering with His purposes on earth.

Prayer is not manipulating God. It is trusting Him, depending on Him, and aligning our hearts with His plans.

The Armor of God

Ephesians 6 teaches that believers are engaged in spiritual warfare. Paul instructs Christians to put on the whole armor of God:

  • The belt of truth.
  • The breastplate of righteousness.
  • The shoes of the Gospel of peace.
  • The shield of faith.
  • The helmet of salvation.
  • The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Notice that every piece of armor points back to Christ. Our protection is not found in rituals or human strength. It is found in the finished work of Jesus.

Common Misunderstandings About Spiritual Authority

● Authority Is Not Personal Greatness

Some people use spiritual authority to exalt themselves. But Jesus taught that greatness in God's Kingdom comes through humility and service.

The believer's authority should never become a source of pride.

● Authority Does Not Mean a Trouble-Free Life

Having authority in Christ does not mean Christians will never experience hardship. The apostles suffered persecution. Paul endured imprisonment.

Many faithful believers throughout history faced great trials. Yet they overcame because Christ was with them.

● Authority Is Not Magic

The power is not in special phrases or formulas. The power is in Jesus.

The sons of Sceva in Acts 19 attempted to use the name of Jesus without truly knowing Him, and they learned that spiritual authority cannot be borrowed through empty words.

True authority flows from genuine faith and relationship with Christ.

Living Daily in the Authority of Christ

Walking in spiritual authority is often less dramatic than people imagine. Spiritual authority becomes effective as believers consistently live in fellowship with God and learn what it means to walk daily in God's power and presence. It looks like choosing faith instead of fear. It looks like praying when anxiety rises. It looks like forgiving when bitterness tempts the heart. It looks like speaking God's truth when lies surround us.

Every act of obedience is an expression of trust in Christ's authority. The Christian life is not about shouting at darkness. It is about walking in the light.

As we grow closer to Jesus, confidence naturally replaces fear. We realize that we are not fighting for victory. We are standing in the victory Christ has already secured.

The authority of the believer is one of God's greatest gifts to His children. It reminds us that we do not face life alone.

Jesus Christ, the Head of all principalities and powers, reigns over heaven and earth. Because we belong to Him, we can stand firm when fear comes. We can resist the enemy without panic. We can pray with confidence. We can proclaim the Gospel with boldness. And we can walk through life's battles knowing that our Savior has already overcome the world.

If you are in Christ today, remember this truth: Your strength is not found in yourself. Your confidence is not found in your emotions. Your victory is not found in your circumstances. Your authority is found in Jesus Christ alone. And the One who holds all authority in heaven and on earth will never fail those who put their trust in Him.
