Lawlessness does not usually appear in a person's life overnight. It can begin with something small—a thought that is entertained, a conviction that is ignored, a compromise that seems harmless, or a desire that becomes more important than God's Word. Over time, repeated choices can shape the heart until disobedience no longer feels serious. This is one reason the Bible speaks so strongly about lawlessness. First John 3:4 gives us a clear connection:
“Sin is lawlessness.” 1 John 3:4
Biblical lawlessness is more than breaking a human rule. It is a heart that resists God's authority and chooses its own way instead. But what causes this condition? Scripture points to several deep causes, including rebellion, deception, pride, hardened hearts, love of sin, rejection of truth, and the influence of evil.

1. Rebellion Against God
At the root of lawlessness is rebellion. From the beginning, humanity has struggled with the desire to live independently of God. Instead of trusting God's wisdom, people sometimes choose their own understanding.
The story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 is an early picture of this. God had given them a command, but the serpent questioned God's Word and encouraged them to choose their own way. Genesis 3:6 describes how Eve saw the forbidden fruit, desired it, and took it. The problem was deeper than eating fruit. It was disobedience to God's command. That same pattern can still appear today.
God says one thing, but our desires say another.
- God's Word calls us to forgive, but our anger says, “Hold on to it.”
- God calls us to honesty, but temptation says, “Nobody will know.”
- God calls us to purity, but desire says, “Just this once.”
Lawlessness begins when we allow our desires to become more authoritative than God.
2. Pride and Self-Will
Pride is another major cause of lawlessness. Pride says, “I know better.” It can make a person resistant to correction, unwilling to admit mistakes, and determined to live according to personal desires. Proverbs 16:18 warns:
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
A proud heart does not easily surrender. This is why following Jesus requires humility. Christ does not simply ask us to add religion to our existing lifestyle. He calls us to surrender ourselves to Him.
Jesus said:
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
Self-denial is difficult because our natural desire is often to put ourselves first. But humility opens the heart to God's correction. A humble person can say, “Lord, I was wrong. Forgive me and teach me Your ways.” That attitude protects the heart from becoming hardened.
3. Deception and Believing Lies
Lawlessness can also grow through deception. Jesus warned about deception when speaking about the last days. Matthew 24:4 says:
“See that no one leads you astray.”

- A lie can sound reasonable.
- A sinful choice can be presented as freedom.
- A compromise can be described as wisdom.

Hebrews 3:15 “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
A heart usually does not become hardened in one moment. God may convict someone, but they ignore Him. He convicts them again, and they make another excuse. Eventually, what once troubled their conscience may no longer bother them. This is why we should respond quickly when God corrects us. - Repent.
- Ask for forgiveness.
- Make the necessary change.
A tender heart is not a perfect heart. It is a heart that remains responsive to God.
5. Love for Sin
Another cause of lawlessness is becoming attached to sinful desires. James 1:14-15 explains that a person can be drawn away by their own desire, and when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin. This gives us an important picture of how temptation can develop. A temptation appears.
- We entertain it.
- We desire it.
- We choose it.
Then repeated choices can become patterns. Eventually, the pattern can become a habit. This is why Christians should not play with temptation.
You do not have to wait until sin becomes overwhelming before taking action. When you recognize something pulling your heart away from God, bring it to Him. Pray about it. Remove unnecessary opportunities for temptation. Seek wise and godly accountability when necessary. Most importantly, remember that obedience is not merely about avoiding punishment. It is about protecting your relationship with God.
6. Rejection of God's Truth
Lawlessness grows when people deliberately reject God's truth. Paul describes a serious spiritual condition in 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12, connecting deception with people who refuse to love the truth.

- We may struggle to understand certain passages.
- We may have questions.
- We may need time to grow.
God is patient with sincere seekers. But deliberately rejecting God's truth because it conflicts with what we want can lead the heart toward rebellion. Isaiah 5:20 gives a sobering warning:
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.”
When moral boundaries become reversed, lawlessness can spread quickly. That is why believers need courage to hold on to biblical truth while still speaking with humility and love.
7. The Influence of a Lawless Environment
The environment around us can also influence our choices.
First Corinthians 15:33 “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’”
The people we constantly listen to, the entertainment we consume, and the attitudes we repeatedly encounter can influence our thinking. This does not mean Christians should isolate themselves from everyone who does not share their faith.
Jesus Himself spent time with people who needed Him. But there is a difference between loving people and allowing their values to shape your heart.
Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
We are called to live in the world without allowing the world to become the master of our hearts.
8. Love Growing Cold
Jesus connected increasing lawlessness with another serious problem:
“Because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” Matthew 24:12
This shows that lawlessness affects more than personal morality. It affects relationships.
- When selfishness increases, compassion can decrease.
- When hatred increases, forgiveness becomes harder.
- When people continually hurt one another, trust can disappear.
A person who repeatedly chooses sin can eventually become less sensitive to the pain their choices cause others. But Christians are called to keep their love alive.
First Corinthians 13:4 “Love is patient and kind.”
Even in a world becoming colder, believers can choose patience.
- We can forgive.
- We can show kindness.
- We can refuse revenge.
- We can pray for those who hurt us.
That does not mean ignoring evil. It means refusing to allow evil to transform our character.
9. A Desire to Live Without Accountability
Another cause of lawlessness is the desire to live as though nobody has the right to question our choices.
People may say:
- “It's my life.”
- “I can do whatever I want.”
- “Nobody can tell me what to do.”
But Scripture reminds us that our lives ultimately belong to God.
Romans 14:12 “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.”
This is not meant to terrify a sincere believer. It reminds us that our choices matter. God sees what other people cannot see. He sees our motives. He sees our private decisions. He sees our struggles. And He also sees our desire to obey Him.
Can Lawlessness Be Overcome?
Yes. The Christian message is not simply that lawlessness exists. It is that God's grace can transform a rebellious heart.
Titus 2:11-12 teaches that God's grace trains us to reject ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives. This is beautiful because grace does more than forgive our past. God's grace teaches us how to live differently. If you have fallen into sin, do not believe that you are beyond God's reach.
First John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Come back to God. Be honest with Him. Repent sincerely. Do not hide behind excuses. And do not allow shame to convince you that you should stay away from the One who can restore you.
How Can Christians Guard Against Lawlessness?

Prayer keeps your relationship with God active and personal.
● Respond quickly to conviction.
Do not allow small compromises to become comfortable habits.
● Guard your influences.
Be intentional about what shapes your thoughts and desires.
● Stay humble.
Be willing to receive correction.
● Keep loving people.
Do not allow the lawlessness around you to make your heart cold.
● Look to Jesus.
Your strength does not come from willpower alone. Christ is the One who changes hearts and gives grace to walk in obedience.

The Bible shows that lawlessness can have several causes, but beneath them is a heart that moves away from God's authority.
