There are times when you look at the world around you and quietly wonder, “When did wrong become so normal?” Things that once caused people to feel ashamed can sometimes be celebrated. Truth can be dismissed, selfishness can be praised, and kindness can seem unusual. Jesus warned that this would happen. He said:
“Because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” Matthew 24:12
Those words are not meant to make us panic. They are meant to make us awake. Biblical lawlessness is more than crime or breaking human rules. It is a rejection of God's authority and a willingness to live contrary to His ways. So how can Christians recognize lawlessness today without becoming judgmental, fearful, or obsessed with what is happening around them? The answer begins with God's Word.
What Does Lawlessness Look Like Today?
Lawlessness can appear in obvious ways, but it can also be subtle. Sometimes it does not look like rebellion at all. It can hide behind popularity, success, entertainment, personal freedom, or even religious activity. The important question is not simply, “What are other people doing?” It is also: “Am I allowing anything in my own heart that is contrary to God's will?”
Jesus taught that what comes out of a person begins within the heart (Mark 7:20-23). That means recognizing lawlessness requires more than watching society. We must allow Scripture to examine us.
Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that God's Word is living and powerful, able to expose the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
1. When God's Truth Is Rejected
One of the clearest signs of lawlessness is rejecting God's truth. Instead of asking, “What does Scripture say?”, people may begin asking, “What do I personally believe?” Feelings, culture, popularity, and personal preference can become greater authorities than God's Word. Isaiah 5:20 gives a serious warning:
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.”
This is what happens when moral boundaries become confused. Wrong is defended while righteousness is mocked. But Christians must be careful here. Recognizing lawlessness does not mean looking down on people. Jesus calls us to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).
Truth should make us humble, not arrogant. Before pointing at someone else, we should allow God's Word to examine our own hearts.
2. When Sin Becomes Normal
Another sign of lawlessness is when repeated exposure to sin makes it feel ordinary. Something that once troubled your conscience may eventually stop bothering you.
- You see it.
- You hear it.
- You laugh about it.
- You become accustomed to it.
Eventually, you may stop asking whether it pleases God. Romans 12:2 warns believers:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
Christians are surrounded by a culture that can influence their thinking. That does not mean we should isolate ourselves from everyone around us. Jesus Himself reached people who were far from God. But we must be careful about what we allow to shape our hearts.
Proverbs 4:23 “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
What repeatedly enters your heart can eventually influence what feels normal.
3. When Love Begins to Disappear
Jesus connected lawlessness with something deeply personal:
“Because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” Matthew 24:12
Notice that Jesus did not only say people would become more sinful. He said love would grow cold. This can happen when selfishness becomes stronger than compassion. You may recognize it when forgiveness becomes extremely difficult, people enjoy seeing others fail, anger becomes the normal response to disagreement, or people stop caring about those who are suffering. Yet Christians are called to live differently.
First Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love as patient, kind, humble, and enduring. In a world where love can grow cold, a believer's kindness can become a powerful testimony. You do not need to become cold simply because others are cold.
- You can still forgive.
- You can still pray.
- You can still show kindness.
- You can still love.
4. When Self Becomes More Important Than God
Lawlessness grows wherever self becomes the center of life. Second Timothy 3:1-5 describes difficult times and begins with the phrase “lovers of self.” The passage continues by describing people who become lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient, ungrateful, and without self-control. This is the opposite of surrender. The question changes from: “Lord, what do You want?” to: “What do I want?” Jesus gave His followers a different path:
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
Following Jesus does not mean getting everything we want.
- Sometimes obedience requires saying no to ourselves.
- Sometimes God asks us to forgive when we would rather remain angry.
- Sometimes He asks us to walk away from something we enjoy.
- Sometimes faithfulness means standing alone.
That is where genuine discipleship becomes real.
5. When People Refuse Correction
A heart moving toward lawlessness often becomes resistant to correction. Nobody likes being told they are wrong. But spiritual maturity requires humility.
Proverbs 12:1 “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.”
God can use Scripture, wise believers, circumstances, and the conviction of the Holy Spirit to correct us. The important thing is how we respond.
- Do we become defensive?
- Do we make excuses?
- Do we blame everyone else?
Or do we pray, “Lord, show me what needs to change”? A tender heart is not a perfect heart. It is a heart that is willing to listen when God speaks.
6. When Deception Replaces Discernment
Jesus gave another warning:
“See that no one leads you astray.” Matthew 24:4
Deception is dangerous because it does not always look dangerous.
- A false idea can sound intelligent.
- A sinful choice can be presented as freedom.
- A compromise can be called wisdom.
- A lie can be repeated until it feels like truth.
This is why Christians need biblical discernment.
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
The Bible helps us test what we hear. Do not believe something simply because it is popular. Do not reject something simply because it is unpopular. Bring everything back to God's Word.
7. When Religious Appearance Replaces Obedience
Perhaps one of the most uncomfortable forms of lawlessness is religious hypocrisy. A person can know Bible verses and still refuse to obey God.
- Someone can attend church while holding bitterness in their heart.
- Someone can speak about holiness while secretly practicing sin.
- Someone can criticize everyone else's failures while refusing to confront their own.
Jesus warned:
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father.” Matthew 7:21
Christianity is not merely about appearing spiritual.
James 1:22 “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
God desires a faith that reaches everyday life.
- How we speak.
- How we treat people.
- How we handle money.
- How we respond when offended.
- How we behave when nobody is watching.
That is where obedience becomes visible.
8. When Your Conscience Becomes Hardened
Lawlessness can develop when a person repeatedly ignores God's conviction. Hebrews 3:15 warns:
“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
A hardened heart can develop gradually.
- God convicts - We ignore Him.
- God warns - We make excuses.
- God calls - We continue walking away.
Eventually, the voice we once responded to may become easier to ignore. That is why you should not postpone repentance. If the Holy Spirit is showing you something that needs to change, respond today. Do not wait for the problem to become bigger.
9. When Evil Begins Influencing Your Character
One of the easiest mistakes Christians can make is allowing the lawlessness around them to make them lawless too.
- Someone hurts you, and you become hateful.
- Someone lies to you, and you decide lying is acceptable.
- Someone treats you unfairly, and you begin seeking revenge.
But Romans 12:21 gives us a different response:
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
You cannot always control what people do to you. But with God's help, you can choose what their actions produce in you. Do not allow someone else's darkness to become darkness inside your heart.
How Can Christians Recognize Lawlessness Without Becoming Judgmental?
This is extremely important. Jesus did not call His followers to become professional critics of the world. He called them to follow Him. When you recognize lawlessness, respond with truth, prayer, wisdom, humility, and love. Jesus taught about removing the log from our own eye before focusing on the speck in someone else's eye (Matthew 7:3-5). This does not mean ignoring sin. It means confronting sin with humility.
- You can stand for truth without becoming cruel.
- You can reject sin without hating people.
- You can warn others without believing you are better than them.
- And you can examine society while still examining your own heart.
How to Stay Faithful in a Lawless World
Stay in God's Word
Scripture keeps your heart anchored when everything around you seems confusing.
Pray Continually
Prayer keeps your relationship with God personal and alive.
Guard Your Heart
Be careful what you repeatedly watch, listen to, celebrate, and allow to influence you.
Respond Quickly to Conviction
When God reveals something wrong, do not defend it. Bring it to Him.
Keep Your Love Alive
Remember Jesus' warning in Matthew 24:12. Do not let increasing lawlessness make your heart cold.
Keep Your Eyes on Christ
Your strength does not come from simply trying harder. It comes from abiding in Jesus. He said:
“Abide in me, and I in you.” John 15:4
The closer we walk with Christ, the more His character becomes visible in us.
A Personal Question to Consider
Instead of only asking, “How bad is the world becoming?”, ask: “How is my heart doing?”
- Is there a sin you have begun to tolerate?
- Is there someone you refuse to forgive?
- Is there an area where you know God is calling you to obey?
- Have you become more interested in criticizing others than growing spiritually yourself?
- Has your love for God become weaker?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, do not run from God. Run toward Him. First John 1:9 promises:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
There is grace for the repentant heart.
Lawlessness Will Not Have the Final Word
Jesus warned that lawlessness would increase, but He did not tell His followers to surrender to fear. He told them to endure.
“But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” Matthew 24:13
That is our calling.
- When others compromise, remain faithful.
- When others become hateful, keep loving.
- When truth becomes unpopular, hold on to God's Word.
- When temptation comes, turn toward Christ.
- When you fall, repent and rise again.
The darkness around us does not have to become darkness within us. Second Thessalonians 2:8 reminds us that Christ will ultimately defeat the lawless one. Evil may appear powerful for a season, but Jesus remains Lord.
Conclusion: Keep Your Heart Awake
Recognizing lawlessness today is not about becoming obsessed with everything wrong in the world. It is about developing spiritual discernment and keeping our hearts close to God. Lawlessness can be recognized when God's truth is rejected, sin becomes normal, love grows cold, self becomes more important than God, correction is resisted, deception is embraced, religious appearance replaces obedience, and hearts become hardened.
But the answer is not fear. The answer is faithfulness. Stay in Scripture. Keep praying. Guard your heart. Love people. Repent quickly. Refuse compromise. And keep your eyes on Jesus. The world may become increasingly confusing, but God's truth remains steady. Culture may change, but Christ does not change. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
So do not let the lawlessness around you steal your love for God. Stay awake. Stay humble. Stay faithful. Keep walking with Jesus.
