There are seasons when you know what God has said, yet everything around you seems to say something different. You prayed, but the answer has not come. You believed, but the situation has not changed. You read God's Word, yet your circumstances seem to be moving in the opposite direction. These are the moments when standing on God's promises becomes real.
Standing on God's promises does not mean pretending that difficulties do not exist. It means choosing to believe what God has spoken even when you cannot yet see the outcome. It means holding firmly to His Word when your feelings are changing, your circumstances are uncertain, and your strength feels small.
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24:35
God's Word remains when everything else changes. His promises give us something solid to hold on to.
What Does It Mean to Stand on God's Promises?
To stand on God's promises means to place your confidence in what God has revealed through His Word and to remain faithful while trusting Him. It does not mean claiming every Bible verse as though it were a personal guarantee of whatever we desire. God's promises must be understood in their biblical context and according to His character and will.
Standing on God's promises means saying: “God, I believe You are faithful even when I do not understand.” It is faith with roots. When the storm comes, a tree with deep roots does not depend on the weather being calm. It remains standing because it is anchored beneath the surface. In the same way, Christians need more than temporary encouragement. We need roots in God's Word. Those roots become stronger when we learn to trust God even when we cannot see the whole picture or understand His timing.
1. Know What God Has Said
You cannot stand firmly on a promise you do not know. This is why reading Scripture matters. God's Word gives us truth to return to when our emotions become unstable.
Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Sometimes God does not show us the entire road. He gives enough light for the next step. When you know Scripture, you have truth to speak over your heart when fear begins speaking louder.
You can remind yourself:
- God is faithful.
- God is with me.
- God gives wisdom.
- God hears His people.
- God is my refuge.
God will never abandon His children. The more deeply God's Word is planted in your heart, the less easily you will be moved by every changing circumstance.
2. Trust God's Character
The strength of a promise depends on the character of the person making it. God's promises are trustworthy because God Himself is trustworthy.
Numbers 23:19 “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent.”
People can make promises and fail to keep them. Circumstances can change. Human strength can disappear. But God does not become less faithful because your situation becomes difficult.
When you stand on God's promises, you are ultimately standing on Him. You may not understand what He is doing. You may not know when the answer will come. But you can know who He is. He is faithful. He is wise. He is good. He is sovereign. And He does not abandon His people.
3. Do Not Let Your Feelings Become Your Foundation
Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable guides. There may be mornings when you wake up full of faith and evenings when you feel discouraged. There may be days when prayer feels powerful and other days when you struggle to find the words. That does not mean God has changed.
Psalm 56:3 “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
Notice that David did not say, “I will never be afraid.” He said, “When I am afraid, I will trust.”
Standing on God's promises means that fear can be present without becoming your foundation.
You can say:
- “Lord, I feel afraid, but Your Word is still true.”
- “I feel weak, but You are still my strength.”
- “I do not understand, but I still choose to trust You.”
That is not pretending. That is faith.
4. Keep Standing When the Answer Is Delayed
One of the greatest tests of faith is waiting. It is easier to believe when you can see evidence of change. But what happens when weeks become months, and months become years?
The temptation is to assume that because you have not seen the answer, God has forgotten you. But Scripture teaches us to wait on Him.
Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength.”
Waiting is not wasted time when God is involved.
- Joseph waited.
- Abraham waited.
- David waited.
- The Israelites waited.
Many people in Scripture had to trust God through seasons where His promise had not yet become visible. Your waiting season may be developing patience, character, wisdom, endurance, or deeper dependence on God.
Do not measure God's faithfulness by the speed of the answer. Even in seasons of delay, we can continue building our confidence in God's faithfulness rather than allowing circumstances to determine what we believe about Him.
5. Remember What God Has Already Done
When you are facing a new battle, remember the battles God has already brought you through. David remembered God's past faithfulness when he faced Goliath. He could look back and say:
“The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:37
David's confidence for tomorrow was strengthened by what God had already done. You can do the same.
- Remember the prayer God answered.
- Remember the door He opened.
- Remember the strength He gave you.
- Remember the time you thought you would not make it, but somehow God carried you through.
- Remember His faithfulness in Scripture.
Your testimony may become an altar of remembrance when your faith feels weak. Sometimes you need to look backward before you can confidently move forward.
6. Stand on God's Word Instead of Your Circumstances
Circumstances can change quickly. Today everything may look hopeful. Tomorrow something unexpected may happen. If your confidence is built entirely on circumstances, your faith will rise and fall with them. But God's Word provides a deeper foundation.
Jesus told a parable about two people who built houses. The wise man built his house upon a rock. When the rain came, the floods rose, and the winds blew, the house remained standing.
Jesus said:
“And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew... and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Matthew 7:25
The storm still came. The difference was the foundation. Standing on God's promises does not mean you will never experience storms. It means your foundation is stronger than the storm.
7. Pray the Promises You Are Standing On
Do not simply read God's promises. Bring them into prayer.
- When you are worried about the future, pray Scripture.
- When you need wisdom, pray Scripture.
- When you feel alone, remind yourself of God's presence.
- When you are waiting, ask God for strength to remain faithful.
For example, Proverbs 3:5 says:
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
You can pray: “Father, I do not understand everything happening around me, but Your Word tells me to trust You. Help me not to lean only on what I see. Give me grace to trust Your wisdom and follow Your direction.”
Prayer turns biblical truth into personal fellowship with God.
8. Obey While You Stand
Standing on God's promises is not simply waiting for God to do something.
- Faith also responds through obedience.
- Noah built the ark before the rain came.
- Abraham went when God called him.
- Joshua and Israel had to move forward according to God's instruction.
There will be times when you are praying for God's direction while He is already waiting for you to obey what He has clearly revealed.
- If Scripture tells you to forgive, forgive.
- If it tells you to love, love.
- If it tells you to seek wisdom, seek wisdom.
- If it tells you to walk in holiness, obey.
Faith does not only say, “I believe God's Word.” Faith says, “Because I believe God's Word, I will live accordingly.”
9. Do Not Give Up in the Middle
One of the most dangerous places in a journey is the middle. The excitement of the beginning has faded, but the destination has not yet appeared. This is where discouragement often comes.
Galatians 6:9 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Do not let a long season convince you that God is absent. Do not allow disappointment to make you abandon what Scripture has taught you.
- Keep praying.
- Keep trusting.
- Keep obeying.
- Keep worshipping.
- Keep seeking God.
You may not know how close you are to a new season.
When You Feel Too Weak to Stand
There may be days when you honestly feel like you cannot keep believing. On those days, remember that your strength does not come only from yourself.
Isaiah 41:10 “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.”
God does not ask you to manufacture strength you do not have. Come to Him. Tell Him the truth.
- “Lord, I am tired.”
- “Lord, I am afraid.”
- “Lord, I need You.”
Sometimes standing on God's promises looks less like a great declaration and more like a tired believer whispering, “Jesus, I still trust You.” And that small act of faith matters.
Conclusion: Stand Firm
Standing on God's promises is not about having a perfect faith. It is about having a faithful God.
There will be moments when you understand and moments when you do not. There will be prayers that seem to receive quick answers and others that require long seasons of waiting. But through every season, God's character remains unchanged. His Word is still true. His presence is still near. His wisdom is still greater than yours. And His faithfulness has not failed.
So keep standing.
- When you are waiting, stand.
- When you are afraid, stand.
- When you cannot see the way forward, stand.
- When your circumstances change, stand.
- When your feelings become uncertain, return to God's Word.
As Paul reminds us:
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58
You may not see everything God is doing today. But you can place your feet firmly on His Word and keep walking with Him. God is faithful. His promises are trustworthy. Stand firm and keep believing.
