Have you ever felt uncertain about a message, teaching, dream, or spiritual experience and wondered, “Is this truly from God?” In a world filled with countless voices claiming spiritual truth, believers need more than feelings or personal opinions. We need the wisdom of Scripture to recognize what comes from God and what does not.
The Bible teaches that there is an unseen spiritual realm, and not every spiritual influence is from the Lord. Some voices lead people closer to God, while others quietly pull hearts away from His truth. This is why Scripture gives believers the responsibility to test the spirits.
Before learning how to test spiritual influences, it is helpful to understand how God develops discernment in the lives of His people. If you want to grow in recognizing His voice and making spiritually wise decisions, learn the biblical principles of spiritual discernment.
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1
Testing the spirits does not mean becoming suspicious of everyone or living in fear. It means walking closely with God, knowing His Word, and developing spiritual wisdom. A mature believer does not accept every message simply because it sounds spiritual. Instead, they examine everything through the truth of Scripture.
Spiritual discernment is not about having a critical heart; it is about having a faithful heart that desires to follow God completely.
What Does It Mean to Test the Spirits?
To test the spirits means to examine spiritual claims, teachings, experiences, and influences to determine whether they align with God’s truth. The word “test” carries the idea of examining something carefully, like a person testing the quality of gold. God does not want His children to be spiritually careless. He desires believers who can recognize truth from deception.
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21
This means believers should not reject everything, but they should not accept everything either. Wisdom requires examination. A message may sound encouraging, a person may appear gifted, or an experience may feel powerful — but the question remains: Does it agree with God’s revealed Word?
God’s truth does not need to compete with Scripture. Anything genuinely from Him will always honor His character and His Word.
Why Does the Bible Tell Us to Test the Spirits?
1. Because False Teachings Exist
Jesus warned that deception would be one of the greatest spiritual dangers.
“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” Matthew 24:24
Not every false teaching looks obviously wrong. Some deception appears attractive, religious, and even impressive. That is why believers must develop spiritual discernment.
The enemy does not always attack by making people reject God completely. Sometimes he works by mixing truth with error. This happened in the Garden of Eden. Satan did not begin by denying everything God said. Instead, he twisted God’s words and created doubt.
Spiritual discernment protects our hearts from being led away from the simplicity and purity of God’s truth.
The First Test: Does It Confess Jesus Christ?
The most important test of any spiritual message is its view of Jesus Christ.
“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God.” 1 John 4:2
Everything that comes from God will honor Jesus. The Holy Spirit does not draw attention away from Christ. He reveals Christ, glorifies Christ, and leads people into deeper relationship with Christ.
“He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” John 16:14
A teaching, prophecy, or spiritual experience that minimizes Jesus, denies His authority, or replaces Him with another source of power cannot be from God. Christ is the center of all true spirituality.
The Second Test: Does It Agree With Scripture?
God’s Word is the standard by which every spiritual message must be measured.
“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20
The Bible is not one opinion among many. It is the foundation of truth. A person may claim to have a revelation, vision, or special message, but if it contradicts Scripture, it must be rejected.
God will never speak something today that opposes what He has already revealed in His Word. This is why believers must become students of Scripture. The more familiar you are with the voice of truth, the easier it becomes to recognize what is false. A person who rarely spends time in God’s Word can easily mistake another voice for God’s voice.
The Third Test: What Fruit Does It Produce?
Jesus taught that people are recognized by their fruit.
“Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:16
A genuine work of God produces spiritual fruit:
- Love
- Humility
- Holiness
- Obedience
- Peace
- Repentance
- Greater devotion to Christ
False spiritual influences often produce the opposite:
- Pride
- Division
- Fear
- Confusion
- Self-exaltation
- Disobedience
A person may speak powerful words, but their character and lifestyle reveal much. God is not only concerned with what someone says; He is concerned with what that message produces in the hearts of people.
The Fourth Test: Does It Point People Toward God or Toward Man?
True spiritual ministry points people to God. Angels in Scripture refused worship. The apostles rejected personal glory. Every true servant of God understands that the purpose of spiritual gifts is to magnify the Lord. John saw an angel in Revelation and wrote:
“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not… worship God.” Revelation 22:9
God’s servants do not seek to replace God’s place in people’s lives. Be careful of any teaching or movement that makes a person, experience, or spiritual gift more important than Christ.nThe Holy Spirit always leads people toward worship, obedience, and dependence on God.
The Fifth Test: Does It Produce Truth and Freedom?
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32
God’s truth brings freedom. It may convict us, correct us, and challenge us, but it ultimately leads to healing and transformation.
False spiritual influences often bring bondage:
- Fear of punishment instead of love for God
- Dependence on human leaders instead of Christ
- Confusion instead of biblical clarity
- Superstition instead of faith
The voice of God may correct you, but it will always lead you closer to Him.
The Role of the Holy Spirit in Discernment
Believers are not left alone to navigate spiritual confusion. God has given the Holy Spirit to guide His children into truth.
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13
The Holy Spirit gives believers spiritual understanding. He helps us recognize truth, convict us of error, and strengthen our relationship with God. However, the Holy Spirit never works apart from Scripture. He does not lead believers into contradiction with the Bible. The Spirit and the Word always agree.
Testing the spirits is only one aspect of a spiritually discerning life. As believers mature in God's Word and learn to follow the Holy Spirit, they become better equipped to recognize His guidance in everyday decisions. Discover how to grow in biblical spiritual discernment and develop a heart that responds wisely to God's truth.
How Believers Can Grow in Spiritual Discernment
1. Know God's Word
Discernment grows through familiarity with Scripture. A person who knows God’s truth can recognize what does not belong.
2. Stay Close to God in Prayer
Prayer keeps our hearts sensitive to God’s leading.
3. Walk in Humility
Pride makes people vulnerable to deception because they become unwilling to receive correction. A humble heart remains teachable.
4. Seek Godly Wisdom
The Bible encourages believers to learn from mature Christians who walk faithfully with God.
“In the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14
5. Examine Before Accepting
Do not believe something simply because it is popular, emotional, or impressive. Test it. Pray about it. Compare it with Scripture.
Testing Spirits Does Not Mean Living in Fear
Some believers become so focused on spiritual deception that they lose sight of God’s goodness. But biblical discernment is not based on fear. It is based on confidence in God. The believer’s focus should not be on darkness but on the light of Christ. Jesus has already defeated the enemy.
“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4
We do not test spirits because we are powerless. We test spirits because we belong to God.
Conclusion: Walk in Truth and Spiritual Wisdom
The Bible teaches that believers must test the spirits because not every spiritual influence comes from God. Through Scripture, prayer, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and a life surrendered to Christ, we can develop true spiritual discernment.
The goal is not simply to identify what is false. The greater purpose is to know God more deeply, follow Jesus more faithfully, and walk confidently in His truth. In a world filled with many voices, the safest place is always close to the Shepherd.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27
When we know His voice, we will not easily be led astray. We can walk with wisdom, peace, and confidence — knowing that the Spirit of God leads His children into truth.
