There are times when faith seems difficult. We pray, wait, and hope, yet the answer does not come as quickly as we expect. In those moments, we may wonder whether God still sees us or whether He will ever intervene. The story of the woman with the issue of blood reminds us that genuine faith does not depend on how easy life is. Instead, it grows stronger because of who God is.
For twelve long years, this woman suffered physically, emotionally, socially, and financially. Yet when she heard about Jesus, something changed within her. She believed that He alone could do what no one else could. Her faith became the bridge that brought her into a life-changing encounter with Christ. The moment she reached out to Jesus carries a powerful lesson about faith, trust, and the meaning behind her encounter with the Savior.
This Bible guide explores what made her faith so powerful and what believers today can learn from her example.
The Story Behind Her Faith
The account is found in Mark 5:25–34, Matthew 9:20–22, and Luke 8:43–48.
"And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians... and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." Mark 5:25–26
According to the Law of Moses (Leviticus 15:25–27), her condition made her ceremonially unclean. This affected nearly every part of her life. She would have experienced isolation, shame, and rejection. People avoided her because touching her would make them ceremonially unclean. Yet her greatest need was not simply physical healing—it was meeting the Savior.
1. Her Faith Began by Hearing About Jesus
"When she had heard of Jesus..." Mark 5:27
Everything changed when she heard about Christ. Faith is born when we hear God's truth.
Romans 10:17 "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
She did not base her hope on rumors or wishful thinking. She heard about Jesus—His compassion, authority, and miracles—and believed He could help her.
Today, powerful faith still begins the same way. It grows as we read Scripture, meditate on God's promises, and hear the gospel. The more we know Christ, the more confidently we trust Him.
2. Her Faith Looked Beyond Human Limitations
For twelve years she had exhausted every human solution. Luke tells us that she "could not be healed of any."
Doctors had tried. Money had been spent. Time had passed. Hope had nearly disappeared. Yet she refused to conclude that her situation was impossible. Human resources had failed, but Jesus had not.
Jeremiah 32:27 "Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?"
Powerful faith recognizes where human ability ends and God's power begins.
3. Her Faith Believed Jesus Was Enough
Mark records her words:
"If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole." (Mark 5:28)
Notice her confidence. She did not say, "Maybe I will be healed." She believed, "I shall be whole." Her confidence was not in the garment itself. It was in Jesus. The meaning behind her reaching for Jesus’ garment reveals a deeper truth about faith: she was not trusting in a piece of clothing, but in the authority and compassion of Christ. Understanding why she reached for His garment helps us see the depth of her faith and what this moment teaches believers today.
The garment had no power apart from the One wearing it. Sometimes people focus on objects, traditions, or methods instead of Christ Himself. But biblical faith always points to Jesus. Hebrews 12:2 reminds believers to be:
"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith."
True faith rests in Christ alone.
4. Her Faith Refused to Be Stopped
Imagine the obstacles she faced. A large crowd surrounded Jesus. She was weak after years of illness. She was considered ceremonially unclean. She could have feared rejection or public embarrassment. Yet none of these obstacles stopped her.
Faith always presses forward despite opposition.
- Blind Bartimaeus continued crying out after people told him to be quiet (Mark 10:48).
- The friends of the paralyzed man opened a roof because they refused to let the crowd stop them (Mark 2:1–12).
Likewise, this woman pressed through until she reached Jesus. Faith often requires perseverance.
5. Her Faith Was Humble
She did not ask for public attention. She simply came behind Jesus. She was not trying to impress anyone. She only wanted His mercy.
James 4:6 "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."
God delights in hearts that recognize their need for Him. Her humility made room for God's power.
6. Her Faith Was Personal
The crowd surrounded Jesus. Many people touched Him. Yet only one touch was different.
Jesus asked,
"Who touched my clothes?" (Mark 5:30)
The disciples thought the question strange because everyone was pressing against Him. But Jesus knew the difference between casual contact and genuine faith.
Many people can attend church, read the Bible, or hear sermons. Yet saving faith is deeply personal. It is not enough to know about Jesus. Each person must personally trust Him.
7. Her Faith Drew the Power of Christ
Mark "And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up..." Mark 5:29
Jesus said,
"I perceive that virtue is gone out of me." Luke 8:46
Her healing was immediate. This does not mean faith itself possesses magical power. Rather, faith connects us to the power and grace of Jesus Christ.
God responds to those who genuinely trust Him according to His perfect will and wisdom.
8. Her Faith Led to a Relationship, Not Just a Miracle
The woman might have slipped away unnoticed. Instead, Jesus stopped. He called her forward. She came trembling and told Him the whole truth. Then Jesus lovingly said,
"Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague." Mark 5:34
What beautiful words! He called her "Daughter." This was more than physical healing. It was acceptance. Restoration. Peace. Her encounter with Jesus was not simply about receiving a miracle; it revealed the relationship between faith, trust, and coming to Christ. The moment she reached out to Him carries a powerful biblical lesson about what genuine faith looks like.
Jesus cared about her heart as much as her body. The Lord never simply solves problems. He invites people into fellowship with Himself.
9. Her Faith Glorified Jesus
The miracle did more than transform one woman's life. It revealed Christ's compassion and divine authority. Everyone witnessed what Jesus had done. Our faith should also point others to Him rather than ourselves.
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:16
Faith that honors Christ becomes a testimony that encourages others to trust Him.
How Can We Have Faith Like Hers?
The woman's example teaches timeless lessons for every believer:
- Hear God's Word regularly because faith grows through Scripture.
- Bring every burden to Jesus instead of relying only on human solutions.
- Trust Christ Himself rather than religious rituals or outward symbols.
- Persevere when obstacles arise.
- Approach God with humility.
- Make your relationship with Jesus personal.
- Believe that Christ is still compassionate, wise, and able to accomplish His perfect will.
- Give Him the glory for every answer, whether immediate or delayed.
Powerful faith is not measured by loud words or dramatic emotions. It is measured by wholehearted trust in Jesus.
Conclusion: A Faith That Rests in an Unchanging Savior
What made the woman's faith so powerful was not that she possessed extraordinary strength. It was that she placed her confidence in an extraordinary Savior. She had every reason to give up after twelve years of suffering, but she chose to believe instead. She pressed through the crowd, reached out in faith, and discovered that Jesus was exactly who she had heard Him to be.
The same Savior still calls people to come to Him today. Whether your need is physical, emotional, spiritual, or relational, His invitation remains:
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28
No matter how long your struggle has lasted, never forget this truth: it is not the strength of your faith that saves and sustains you, but the greatness of the Savior in whom your faith rests. Christ is still able to heal, restore, forgive, and give peace to all who come to Him in humble trust.
