Following Jesus is more than believing the right things; it is becoming more like Him. Christianity is not only about attending church, reading Scripture, or knowing biblical truths—it is about allowing the character of Christ to be formed within us.
The greatest evidence that we belong to Jesus is not merely what we say, but how we live. When the world sees humility instead of pride, love instead of hatred, forgiveness instead of revenge, and compassion instead of indifference, they see a reflection of Christ.
“Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children and walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us.” Ephesians 5:1-2
Christlike behavior means allowing the heart of Jesus to influence our words, attitudes, decisions, and relationships. Let us look at powerful examples of how Jesus lived and how we can follow His example.
These outward actions flow from an inward transformation. As God changes our hearts, He forms within us the qualities that reflect His Son. Discover how Christ's nature is developed in the life of every believer.
1. Showing Unconditional Love
The greatest characteristic of Jesus was love. His love was not based on people’s perfection, status, or response. He loved sinners, welcomed the rejected, touched the unclean, and showed mercy to those society ignored.
“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.” John 13:34
Christlike love goes beyond loving those who love us. It reaches toward those who cannot repay us. Jesus loved Judas even though He knew Judas would betray Him. He loved Peter even though Peter would deny Him.
A Christlike person learns to love with grace. This does not mean accepting wrongdoing, but it means seeing people through the eyes of God.
Example:
Instead of responding to someone’s anger with anger, a believer chooses patience. Instead of holding bitterness against someone who hurt them, they pray for healing and forgiveness.
2. Practicing Humility
Jesus, though He was the Son of God, lived with incredible humility. He did not seek earthly recognition or power. He served others willingly.
“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.” Philippians 2:6-7
One of the clearest examples of Christ’s humility was when He washed His disciples’ feet. In that culture, foot washing was the job of a servant, yet Jesus—the Master—knelt down and served.
“I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:15
Humility means we do not think we are better than others. We are willing to serve, listen, admit when we are wrong, and give God the glory.
Example:
A Christlike person does not seek attention for every good deed. They serve quietly because their reward comes from God.
3. Forgiving Others
Jesus was a model of forgiveness. Even while suffering on the cross, He prayed for the very people who were causing His pain.
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34
Forgiveness is one of the most challenging expressions of Christlike behavior because our natural desire is often to hold onto anger. But Jesus calls His followers to release bitterness and trust God with justice.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
Forgiveness does not mean pretending that pain never happened. It means refusing to allow hatred and resentment to control our hearts.
Example:
When someone disappoints us, we choose prayer over revenge and grace over bitterness.
4. Showing Compassion to the Hurting
Jesus was deeply moved by human suffering. He did not see people as problems; He saw them as precious souls created by God. When Jesus saw the crowds, Scripture says:
“He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew 9:36
Jesus healed the sick, comforted the grieving, fed the hungry, and welcomed children. His compassion revealed the heart of the Father.
A Christlike believer notices people’s pain and responds with kindness.
Example:
A person who reflects Christ does not ignore someone struggling. They offer encouragement, practical help, prayer, or simply a listening ear.
5. Speaking With Grace and Truth
Jesus always spoke truth, but He spoke it with love. He never used truth as a weapon to destroy people. His words brought conviction, hope, and restoration.
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18
Christlike speech is gentle, honest, and full of grace. Jesus corrected people, but He did so with the desire to restore them. He confronted sin while still showing mercy to sinners.
Example:
Instead of harsh criticism, a believer learns to speak words that encourage growth and point people toward God.
6. Serving Others Selflessly
Jesus described His mission on earth as service.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
The world often teaches people to seek power, recognition, and personal advantage. Jesus teaches us to serve. Christlike service means helping others without expecting praise or reward.
Example:
A believer serves their family, church, community, and neighbors with a willing heart because they are serving Christ through serving others.
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
7. Walking in Patience and Gentleness
Jesus was patient with His disciples. They often misunderstood Him, made mistakes, and lacked faith, yet He continued teaching and loving them.
The fruit of the Spirit includes:
“Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23
Christlike patience means responding with calmness instead of reacting with frustration.
Example:
When someone makes the same mistake repeatedly, a Christlike person chooses patience and helps them grow instead of giving up on them.
8. Living a Life of Prayer
Jesus depended on the Father through prayer. Before important decisions, before ministry, and during difficult moments, Jesus prayed.
“Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16
Prayer was not just a religious activity for Jesus; it was His source of strength and connection with the Father. A Christlike believer understands that spiritual strength comes from God.
Example:
Instead of facing challenges only with human wisdom, they seek God’s guidance through prayer and Scripture.
9. Showing Mercy Instead of Judgment
Jesus showed mercy to people who were broken and rejected. When religious leaders brought a woman caught in adultery to Him, they wanted condemnation, but Jesus responded with mercy.
“Neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.” John 8:11
Jesus did not approve of sin, but He offered restoration. Christlike behavior means we do not become proud judges of others. We remember that we also need God’s grace.
10. Obeying God Even When It Is Difficult
The greatest example of Christlike obedience was Jesus submitting to the Father’s will in the garden of Gethsemane.
“Not my will, but yours be done.” Luke 22:42
Jesus chose obedience even when it meant suffering. A Christlike life requires surrender. Sometimes following God means choosing what is right over what is easy. Every step of obedience allows God to shape us into the likeness of His Son, forming His attitudes, values, and character within us. Learn more about developing a heart that reflects Jesus every day.
Example:
A believer chooses honesty when lying would be easier. They choose purity when temptation is strong. They choose faithfulness when quitting seems attractive.
Becoming More Like Christ Daily
Christlike behavior does not happen overnight. It is the work of the Holy Spirit transforming us from the inside out.
“And we all…are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
Every act of love, every moment of forgiveness, every humble service, and every choice to obey God allows Christ’s character to shine through us.
The goal of the Christian life is not simply to know about Jesus—it is to become like Jesus. When we walk in His love, humility, compassion, forgiveness, and obedience, we become living reflections of His presence in a world that desperately needs Him.
Prayer:
“Lord Jesus, shape my heart to look more like Yours. Teach me to love as You love, forgive as You forgive, serve as You served, and walk in obedience to the Father. Let my life reveal Your character and bring glory to Your name. Amen.”
