Introduction: Our Perfect Mediator
“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.” Hebrews 4:14
Throughout the Old Testament, God appointed high priests to represent His people before Him. They offered sacrifices, prayed on behalf of Israel, and entered the Holy of Holies once a year to make atonement for the nation's sins. Yet every earthly high priest was imperfect. They were sinners themselves and could never completely remove sin. Then Jesus came.
Unlike every priest before Him, Jesus is the perfect and eternal High Priest. He offered not the blood of animals but His own precious blood. His sacrifice was made once and for all, never needing to be repeated. Today, He stands before the Father, continually interceding for everyone who belongs to Him.
Understanding Jesus as our High Priest fills our hearts with confidence, peace, and gratitude. It reminds us that we are never alone because our Savior is always representing us before God.
What Is a High Priest?
In the Old Testament, the high priest was the spiritual representative of God's people. His responsibilities included:
- Offering sacrifices for sin
- Entering God's presence on the Day of Atonement
- Interceding for the people
- Teaching God's law
- Leading Israel in worship
The office of the high priest pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who would perfectly fulfill everything the earthly priesthood could only symbolize.
"For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God." Hebrews 5:1
Why Did We Need a Perfect High Priest?
Sin separated humanity from God. No person could remove that separation through good works or religious ceremonies. Even Israel's priests had to offer sacrifices for their own sins before ministering for others.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
Humanity needed someone who was completely holy, perfectly righteous, and able to stand before God on our behalf. Only Jesus met those qualifications.
Jesus Is the Great High Priest
Hebrews calls Jesus our Great High Priest because His priesthood is greater than every priest who came before Him.
"Seeing then that we have a great high priest...Jesus the Son of God..." Hebrews 4:14
Jesus is greater because:
- He is the Son of God.
- He lived without sin.
- He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice.
- He entered the heavenly sanctuary.
- His priesthood lasts forever.
Unlike earthly priests who died and were replaced, Jesus remains our High Priest forever. His eternal priesthood is part of His greater ministry of standing between a holy God and sinful humanity. Discover how Jesus brings us into God's presence as our Mediator.
Jesus Understands Our Weaknesses
One of the greatest comforts of knowing Jesus as our High Priest is that He understands our struggles.
"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." Hebrews 4:15
Jesus experienced:
- Rejection
- Hunger
- Weariness
- Sorrow
- Betrayal
- Temptation
- Pain
- Grief
Because He walked this earth, He understands what we face. When we pray, we are speaking to Someone who truly knows our struggles and responds with compassion.
Jesus Offered the Perfect Sacrifice
Old Testament sacrifices had to be repeated continually because they could never permanently remove sin. Jesus changed everything.
"But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God." Hebrews 10:12
His sacrifice was perfect because:
- He was without sin.
- He willingly laid down His life.
- His blood fully satisfied God's justice.
- His death secured eternal redemption.
Nothing more needs to be added to Christ's finished work.
Jesus Opened the Way to God
When Jesus died on the cross, something remarkable happened. The veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom.
"Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus." Hebrews 10:19
This signified that the barrier between God and humanity had been removed. Through Jesus:
- We can approach God freely.
- We no longer rely on earthly priests.
Every believer has direct access to the Father. Prayer is now possible because our High Priest has opened the way.
Jesus Continually Intercedes for Us
Jesus' ministry did not end at the cross. Even now He intercedes for His people.
"Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost...seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." Hebrews 7:25
● What does this mean?
Jesus continually represents believers before the Father. His ongoing intercession reveals His unique role as the One who stands between God and humanity on our behalf. When we fail, He remains our Advocate. His intercession gives us confidence that our salvation rests in His faithfulness, not our perfection.
Jesus Is a Priest Forever
Earthly priests served for a limited time because death ended their ministry. Jesus lives forever.
"Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec." Hebrews 7:17
His priesthood is eternal. Because He never dies:
- His ministry never ends.
- His promises never fail.
- His love never changes.
- His salvation is complete forever.
What a comfort to know that our High Priest will never leave His position.
How Should We Respond?
