Is witchcraft a sin in the Bible?

Yes, witchcraft is a sin in the Bible. It is condemned by God throughout Scripture, both in the Old and New Testaments. Witchcraft is considered a form of rebellion, idolatry, and an open door to demonic influence. God warns His people to avoid it completely.

What Is Witchcraft?

Witchcraft involves trying to use supernatural powers apart from God. This can include:

● Casting spells

● Consulting spirits or mediums

● Fortune-telling

● Using charms or magic

● Speaking to demons

● Engaging in astrology or horoscopes

● Participating in occult rituals

These practices seek power, knowledge, or control from sources other than God, which is why the Bible strictly forbids them.

Old Testament Warnings

1. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (KJV)

"There shall not be found among you... a witch... or a consulter with familiar spirits... For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord."

God says witchcraft is an abomination—something He detests. He wanted His people to be separate from the evil practices of surrounding nations.

2. Exodus 22:18 (KJV)

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

In Old Testament Israel, witchcraft was such a serious sin that it carried the death penalty under the Law of Moses.

3. Leviticus 19:31 (KJV)

"Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God."

God says these practices defile a person. They open doors to spiritual corruption and danger.

New Testament Teaching

1. Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV)

"Now the works of the flesh are... idolatry, witchcraft... they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

Witchcraft is listed as a work of the flesh that keeps people from God's kingdom. It is a serious spiritual offense.

2. Acts 19:19 (KJV)

"Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men..."

When people in Ephesus believed in Jesus, they burned their witchcraft books as a sign of true repentance. They chose God’s power over the devil’s lies.

3. Acts 8:9-24 – Simon the Sorcerer

Simon practiced sorcery but believed in the gospel. However, when he tried to buy spiritual power, Peter rebuked him sharply.

“Thy heart is not right in the sight of God… Repent therefore…” (v. 21-22)

This shows that true spiritual power comes only from God, not from magical manipulation or money.

 Why Is Witchcraft a Sin?

● It replaces trust in God with trust in demons or spirits.

● It invites darkness into a person’s life.

● It breaks the First Commandment: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3)

● It is a form of rebellion.1 Samuel 15:23 says: "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft..." God sees rebellion—turning away from Him—as equal to witchcraft because both involve rejecting His authority.

Can Someone Be Forgiven?

Yes! God is merciful. Anyone involved in witchcraft can be saved if they:

● Repent sincerely (turn away from the sin)

● Renounce all practices and objects

● Believe in Jesus Christ

● Ask for deliverance and cleansing

1 John 1:9 (KJV):

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
